The Spy Who Dumped Me

(15) Out now

If you liked The Other Guys or The Hangover, this should hit the spot

MILA Kunis plays Audrey, a jilted lover who contacts her ex and finds out he is a secret agent. Not only that but she’s been caught up in his deadly work.

She’s joined for the international intrigue by her mouthy best friend Morgan (Ghostbusters’ Kate McKinnon).

Early doors, there’s the scene that introduces McKinnon doing her ‘look at me, I’m a quirky goofball’ routine and for a worrying moment you think it might be one of those very laboured, forced comedies.

But have faith. As well as being hugely swoon-worthy, Mila Kunis is pretty good at picking scripts and her belief in this one is not misplaced.

The Spy Who Dumped Me is funny, acerbic and surprisingly twisty.

McKinnon, who like her character here can sometimes be ‘a bit much’, settles into a charming performance.

The supporting cast helps, with Justin Theroux, Sam Heughan, James Fleet, Lolly Adefope, Jane Curtin, Paul Reiser and especially Gillian Anderson as an icy spy boss all delivering the laughs.

If you liked The Other Guys or The Hangover, this should hit the spot.

Expect action and violence galore as Grey seeks to use his new powers to avenge his wife’s death

THESE days, gadgets do everything for us – from simple things such as drawing the curtains, to 3D printing and self-driving cars.

So this futuristic thriller, where tech rules, doesn’t seem too unrealistic.

When Grey (Logan Marshall-Green), is left in a wheelchair and his wife killed during a car-jacking, the technophobe turns to a gadget king who offers him an experimental microchip implant to regain his movement and enhance his body.

From the same writer as Saw (Leigh Whannell), you can expect action and violence galore as Grey seeks to use his new powers to avenge his wife’s death.

Though this doesn’t have the glitter of a big budget movie, its storyline is fresh and entertaining – though a little gory.

Josie

(15) Out Jan 14

A film-noir-esque adventure with a bewilderingly frenetic ending

THIS film-noir-esque adventure sees Sophie Turner (Game Of Thrones, X-Men) as Josie, a girl who embarks on an unlikely friendship with loner and school security guard Hank (Dylan McDermott).

But suspicions are aroused by their secretive lives and how they intertwine with one another – all is not as it seems.

Ultimately though, these secrets are far too easy to predict. Subtlety is not something that has been grasped with this one.

And a bewilderingly frenetic ending jars with the film leading up to it.

Until this final act the film is a good watch and Turner’s performance shines through the cracks, capturing the vulnerability of her character underneath a brash persona.

Fear The Walking Dead: Season 4

(15) Out now

It’s become a show about zombies, seemingly written by zombies for zombies

THE little zombie sister to The Walking Dead lurches in a new direction this season, with more new characters than you can shake a stick at.

One of them – literally shaking a stick – is warrior monk-like Morgan (Lennie James), who crosses over from the main show into the spin-off.

And it’s not long before he encounters the Clarks, the family who have been the beating heart of FTWD so far.

The first half of the 16-episode saga crosses over multiple timelines and can occasionally get confusing.

The new characters are largely successful, especially good-hearted cowboy John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt) and the enigmatic Laura (Dharma & Greg’s Jenna Elfman).

But it’s very uneven, with several episodes being either dull or dumb; hokey and melodramatic dialogue; and lacklustre new bad guys in the Vultures, a gang whose motivations are poorly defined and just don’t work.

The second half introduces yet more new characters – some are entertaining enough but one is an irritating beer brewer who it’s impossible to believe would have survived this many years into a zombie apocalypse.

Some of the writing and plotting is laughably bad, full of unbelievable coincidences and smart characters acting in suicidally moronic ways, while even the zombies start behaving very oddly against type simply to facilitate certain action set pieces.

By the rather ludicrous end, you’ll be wondering if the writers and producers were bitten at some point.

It’s become a show about zombies, seemingly written by zombies for zombies.

And yet… there are some thrilling set-pieces in the first half, including an undead-filled waterpark, some BIG shocks and perhaps the best single episode to date in either franchise – Episode 5, Laura. It also ties up a few character arcs.

Overall it’s certainly worth persevering with – it’s just that you may not be too eager to continue into Season 5.

McQueen

A well-crafted and thoughtful film that is a fascinating insight into his life and career

FROM his early acclaimed shows to his ascent into superstardom at Givenchy and Gucci, Alexander McQueen had a fascinating life and career.

This documentary offers an entertaining insight into the surreal world of fashion by giving centre stage to his spectacular, audacious shows – while, poignantly, friends, colleagues and family speculate on how childhood trauma and the increasing pressure of his work led to his tragic death at just 40.

This is a well-crafted and thoughtful film.

Bloody Spear At Mount Fuji

(12) Out now

If, from the title, you’re expecting an old-fashioned kung fu-style movie, you may be disappointed

BOOZY samurai Kojuro hits the road with two servants in Japanese director Tomu Uchida’s 1955 classic, now rereleased on Blu-ray.

If, from the title, you’re expecting an old-fashioned kung fu-style movie, you may be disappointed.

Instead it’s an enjoyable road movie highlighting and mocking social rules and inequalities through the various people from all walks of life that our hero meets on the way.

Even the spear-wielding maniac hinted at in the title is not who you might expect.

And finally…

After a year in the DVD hotseat, I’m passing over the reins into the safe hands of Charlie Wright from next week. I’d just like to say thank you to the small army of volunteers at The Sun, City University, family, friends and beyond who have helped out with writing the reviews, without whom the online column wouldn’t have been possible.

Also to the film PRs for their patience, to my colleagues on Sun Online for taking this on and beavering away overnight to ensure the reviews get to you each week, and most of all to the small but loyal band of online readers – especially those who sent messages of support for the column. They were all much appreciated!
