New photo Carole Middleton still asks Kate Middleton and Pippa Middleton for advice on Party Pieces business

The Duchess of Cambridge's mother has given her second interview in a week as she continues to speak publicly following a 15-year silence.

Carole Middleton, 63, broke personal protocol to speak to two publications - and pose for accompanying photo shoots - after declining media requests in an apparent bid to maintain the privacy of her daughter Kate, 36, son-in-law Prince William, 36, and their young family.

Well versed in living in the public sphere, Mrs Middleton spoke to Good Housekeeping about her company Party Pieces but seemed less inclined to talk about her children.

It comes days after her interview with Daily Telegraph journalist Lisa Armstrong, which was published in two parts over the weekend.

Speaking in Good Housekeeping's January issue, the mother-of-three told how she still turns to Kate, Pippa, 35, and James, 31, for business advice. 

She said: 'My children have all worked for the business. Catherine started the First Birthday brand – she chose the products and looked after all the imagery and the catalogue production. 

'Pippa set up the blog, as we didn't have one. James came up with the idea of personalised cakes and got them off the ground for us.

'Because they all grew up with me working, Party Pieces has been very much part of our lives and what we talked about. I still ask their advice and say "What do you think of this?"' 

Carole, 63, who celebrates 30 years of success with Party Pieces this year, told how she started the company after she and husband Michael, 69, returned to the UK after living abroad. 

'In 1987, I had two young children and was pregnant with my son, James,' she recalled. 'We had come back to the UK from living abroad and I was a full-time mum. 

'I didn't want to miss out on my children growing up, so I considered starting my own business.'

The idea for Party Pieces came from her own personal need for supplies for her own children's parties. After putting a notice in her daughters' playgroup, she quickly found there was a demand for a dedicated business. 

She continued: 'For the first year, business came through advertising in playgroups. Our big break came when I used a company called Red House Books to send out flyers about Party Pieces. 

'We put out 10,000 leaflets, which gave a huge boost to our orders. I thought if we could do that on 10,000, why not send out 100,000? We could scale up.

'We realised we needed a warehouse, so we moved to a small start-up unit in Hungerford. In 1995, we moved to Child's Court Farm, where we've been ever since.'

In her interview with the Daily Telegraph, Mrs Middleton, whose grandson Prince George is the future king, described herself as 'normal' and a 'hands-on' mother and grandmother, and said family comes first in her life.

The 63-year-old said her family is 'paramount', adding: 'They come first and that will always be the case, even when I have more me time.'

She added: 'My biggest fear (as her offspring grew up) was that I'd lose my family, but we've stayed close. '

Referring to William and her daughter Pippa's husband James Matthews, a hedge fund manager, she said: 'I have two lovely sons-in-law and I hope I'll have a lovely daughter-in-law.' 

Mrs Middleton is grandmother to Prince George, five, Princess Charlotte, three, and Prince Louis, seven months. Her youngest grandson Arthur, the first child of Pippa and James, was born in October.
