A 'very promising' rugby league academy player has been left with a bleed on his brain as a group of bouncers were sacked for savagely attacking him and a friend outside a nightclub in Manchester.
Joe Sharratt, an 18-year-old academy player at St Helens, is still recovering in hospital. His mother, Jane, told the BBC her son was now 'sitting up and talking'.
Up to eight door staff were filmed joining the attack outside the former base of Manchester’s Factory Records, which is now a nightclub and live music venue in the city centre.
The footage starts with Mr Sharratt dropping to the floor after being punched. The bouncers then surround other man before dragging him around in the Sunday 3.20am bust-up in Manchester
Mr Sharratt is seen being thrown to the ground before door staff repeatedly punch his friend, Leon Cooper, as he tries to reach him.
The pharmacy student at Manchester University said he and Mr Sharratt were escorted out of the club following a "pushing" incident inside.
He exchanged swearwords with one of the bouncers before another attacked his friend before turning on him.
"I wasn't trying to attack them... I was just trying to get to my mate,' he said.
Management at the venue, now known as Factory Manchester, have condemned the ‘distressing’ scenes, at 3.20am on Sunday, and say they ‘will not tolerate’ such behaviour.
Mr Sharratt had been on a night out after playing for Lancashire Schoolboys against Australia schoolboys in Manchester on Saturday.
Chief Inspector Cherie Buttle, of Greater Manchester Police, said: ‘We’re aware that there are a number of videos circulating on social media and I cannot stress how important it is that those with footage make contact with us.’
St Helens said Mr Sharratt had taken his A Levels in the summer. He deferred a university place to play for the club’s under 19s team during the current season.
The group of up to eight bouncers are then seen repeatedly punching the man in the face and head
The man then falls to his knees and is then punched repeatedly in the back in the shock footage
A club spokesman added that the teenager was in contention for representing England schoolboys for the first time in another match against the touring Australia team this coming weekend.
In a statement, the club said: ‘Joe is of impeccable character and is an upstanding member of our Academy system. He represented Lancashire Schoolboys against Australian Schoolboys with distinction on Saturday and was hoping to represent England next weekend.
‘He is a top academic achiever with a very bright future ahead of him alongside his rugby league prowess.
‘Our welfare team are now in contact with Joe’s family and we will offer any assistance we can at this distressing time. Understandably, our thoughts are now with Joe and his family.’
The nightclub’s bouncers were condemned as ‘animals’ by people sharing footage of the attack on social media.
Mark Bray wrote: ‘Totally uncalled for. Bouncers thinking they have the right to beat someone up. Their job is to remove someone from a building not to scrap with them on the street.’
Night time economy adviser for Greater Manchester Sacha Lord hit out at the bouncers in a tweet in which he shared the video
People went on Twitter to express their disgust about the incident
In a statement, Factory Manchester said: ‘We have launched a full investigation into this distressing incident and will be working with the police, local authority and our third party security provider to ensure that the matter is dealt with swiftly and appropriately.
‘Factory is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all its customers and we will not tolerate this sort of behaviour from anyone directly or indirectly employed by us, whatever the circumstances.
‘Any security personnel found to be involved will be terminated with immediate effect, regardless of the outcome of any police investigation.
‘Having viewed both the CCTV footage and the video circulating on social media, we can only say that we are shocked by what we have seen.’
