New photo Amir Khan to snub long-awaited Kell Brook bout and take on Terence Crawford

AMIR KHAN is set to snub Kell Brook AGAIN to take on the undefeated American Terence Crawford.

Talks between the Brit rivals have been going on for six excruciating years – and it was set to be finalised this month.

Eddie Hearn, who promotes both Khan and Brook, said last week that the welterweights owe it to the British fight fans and that “there’s no excuse why that fight shouldn’t happen.”

But Khan, 31, admitted he not may wait for Brook and instead lock horns with pound-for-pound star Crawford.

He said: “If Brook doesn’t happen because of the weight then it doesn’t happen.

“I’ve said what I’ve wanted, and if the split is right and financially it makes sense then 100% I will take the fight. But I only want to take the fight if I can gain from it.

“I’ve just been offered a big deal with good money to fight in America against a tougher fighter, a bigger name. I was quite surprised myself but when it came I am obviously going to look at all avenues.

“If it is to be something like Crawford then it has to be done in the [next] 10 days, two weeks, definitely.

“Do I stick with the Kell Brook fight –which I know will always be there- or do I take this next big fight, which might not be there for me.

“They’re both great fights but the person in America is a bigger fight, a bigger name – not in Britain but around the world. And it’s probably a tougher fight and it would put you straight in the pound-for-pound rankings.

“Most of the talks have been agreed with Kell but because of this now coming in I am waiting on a few more things.

“When will I ever get the chance to fight for a proper pound-for-pound title again – it will never be there. Brook will always be there.”

Crawford, 31, is a world champion in three weight classes and has held the WBO welterweight title since June 2018.

He is undefeated in his 34 fights –winning 25 by KO- and in May was ranked as the second best active boxer in the world.

Khan was last seen in the ring in September, where he beat Colombian Samuel Vargas by unanimous decision.

Brook takes on unheralded Australian Michael Zerafa in his hometown Sheffield on Saturday.

And despite Khan now likely to snub Brook, the Bolton fighter is adamant he wants the fight to happen in the future – as long as Brook gets the job done against Zerafa.

He added: “Most of the talks have been agreed with Kell but because of this now coming in I am waiting on a few more things.

“We 100% owe it to the British crowd, it’s a massive one for the fight fans. I am happy to do the fight if we can agree on the weight. That’s the biggest thing.

“But it’s also a business and has to make sense financially. My team is looking into it. I will fight anyone that’s put in front of me but it has to make sense.

“Kell has to win on Saturday or it will just kill the fight if he doesn’t. He should win though, he’s fighting a stripper! He’s a male stripper. He definitely needs to up his gain.

“I don’t know who’s at fault there, is it Eddie Hearn who is making him fight these easy opponents?

“The Brook fight is always going to be there. It’s not like he’s going to go because he needs that fight more than me. I know he will be there.”

Amir Khan is launching the ‘Ring the Changes’ initiative with online financial trading broker ThinkMarkets (www.thinkmarkets.com) to support under-privileged young people across the UK through fundraising, mentorship, education and employment opportunities.
