New photo Top professor who was sacked after saying violinists were sometimes called ‘gypos’ was wrongfully dismissed

A TOP music professor sacked after calling violinists “gypos” was wrongfully dismissed, a tribunal has ruled.

Francesca Carpos-Young was only guilty of “foolishness” for not realising her comments may be taken “out of context” by young students.

The professor, 59, is now demanding her job back at the Royal Academy of Music, which must pay compensation.

She told The Sun last night: “I am thrilled by the verdict.

“Throughout my career I have been an advocate for equality and passionate about exposing uncomfortable truths in the classical music industry.”

Bosses ditched the bassoonist a year ago after she emailed 800 students with tips on building their career. Dr Carpos-Young wrote: “Be discreet; what’s on tour stays on tour.

“Become familiar with shared understanding of anecdotes, caricature, stereotype and jokes.

“You may hear terms like this: Pond life = (string players). Gypos (short for gypsies) = violinists specifically.’”

Students took offence, with 58 signing an open letter and others boycotting her lectures. She was fired for gross misconduct after allegedly bringing the academy into disrepute.

But tribunal chair Sarah Goodman ruled her comments were “ironic” and “intended to convey the real world”.

She upheld Dr Carpos-Young’s claims for wrongful dismissal and victimisation. Compensation will be set at a later date.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
