PAGANS and Rastas serving in the military are getting their own official support groups.

The Defence Pagan ­Network and the British Armed Forces Rastafarian Network will meet for the first time next month.

They will draw together followers in the same way as established networks for other faiths, senior officers hope. One defence insider said: “With the Army being based so close to Stonehenge it makes sense to recognise the Pagans finally.

“On the Rastas, it also makes sense but the rules on drug use still apply. Basically, the Armed Forces is becoming more diverse, and this is further evidence of it.” There are 150 Pagans and 210 Rastas in the 150,00-strong Armed Forces, official figures show.

Paganism is a broad term for faiths honouring the Earth and includes those that cast spells in the practice of Wicca.

Rastafarianism grew out of 1930s Jamaica and followers advocate smoking cannabis.

In an email to staff, defence chief Lt Gen Richard Nugee said BAFRN was being set up to “connect, empower, mentor and support all Rastas”.

He added that the Pagan network would connect followers to their community “to ensure their spiritual needs are met”.
