New photo Speed cameras for BICYCLES costing £12k are put on popular beach promenade to stop ‘fast’ cyclists going over 10mph speed limit

SPEED cameras for bicycles costing £12,000 have been put on a popular beach promenade to slow down “fast” cyclists.

Furious bike users have slammed the decision to install the four digital signs along the seven-mile prom in Bournemouth, Dorset.

Nicole Nagel, who founded Bournemouth Cycling Without Age, accused the council of being “totally anti-cycling”.

“I’m from Germany where a lot is done for cyclists but I’ve lived here 20 years and it’s very very dangerous for cyclists,” he told The MailOnline.

“They could have used that money to build a proper cycle lane – especially for children, to cross the road safely on bikes, something to make it more appealing to use bikes, rather than putting speed cameras up.”

The move came after concerns grew over safety on the promenade. Last year a 72-year-old grandmother was left badly hurt after she was mown down by a cyclist doing 20mph.

And two months later a five-year-old boy was left with cuts and bruises after being hit by a speeding cyclist.

The £3,000-a-piece vehicle activated signs flash up the speed limit of 10mph to warn offending riders they are going too fast.

They come in addition to existing signage that reminds cyclists of the 10mph speed list and that pedestrians have the right of way.

Three of them have been paid for by the Bournemouth Borough Council, while the fourth is funded by beach hut owners fed up with cyclists “flying” past their cabins.

But Ann Gerrard, chairwoman of the Bournemouth Beach Hut Association, told the MailOnline: “People do abuse it even though there are signs up informing cyclists of the speed limit. They just absolutely fly by on some parts of the prom.

“We have tried to stop people and tell them the speed limit but we just get a lot of verbal abuse.”

She added that there had been “a lot of near misses, especially with holiday-makers”, and hopes that the signs will encourage people to slow down.

In addition to the signs, there is a total ban on cycling during July and August, when Bournemouth beach is packed with up to 100,000 visitors a day.

Chris Saunders, Bournemouth and Poole Tourism’s head of operations, said that the digital signs would change to show “no cycling” during the summer ban.

He added: “Cycling along the promenade is a pleasure that many residents and visitors enjoy and the council actively promote as a safe route to commute and keep fit.

“The interactive signs are designed to encourage cyclists and delivery vehicles to slow down and help ensure the promenade is safe for all to use.”
