New photo National Trust steps in after museum refuses to date exhibits with ‘BC’ — in case it offended non-Christians

A MUSEUM has been slammed by visitors after it refused to date exhibits using the standard term “BC” (before Christ) – in case it offended non-Christians.

And now the National Trust has stepped in to urge its other sites NOT to follow suit after Avebury – a Neolithic stone circle monument and museum in Wiltshire – was mocked for its misguided political correctness.

The venue scrapped “BC” and “AD” (anno domini, meaning the “year of the Lord”) in favour of “BCE” (before common era) and CE (common era) on a timeline explaining the history of the World Heritage Site.

But the move sparked outrage, with visitors pointing out British leaders of other faiths do not find the dating system offensive.

Visitor David Pearson, a retired banking consultant, said: “All it does is offend Christians, yet I very much doubt people of a different persuasion, or no persuasion, are offended by the normal version.

Nothing good comes of this sort of thing, except someone high up somewhere gets a satisfied feeling because they have done something modern.”

The National Trust has vowed to instruct Avebury to correct the terms used on its signs.

A spokesman told the paper: “The National Trust’s editorial style is to use AD and BC when writing dates, and this has been the case for many years. We do this to ensure a consistent approach and will be looking at the way the dates are written at Avebury Manor.”

Staff at Avebury were unavailable for comment.
