MORE than 17,000 Brits are needlessly dying from cancer each year because of delays in getting a diagnosis, a damning report reveals.
GPs here are much less likely to investigate cancer or refer patients to specialists than doctors in countries with higher survival rates.

Professor Sir Mike Richards, the Government’s former cancer czar, said the failings are “equivalent to a jumbo jet of people falling from the sky every two weeks”.
He warned too many patients struggle to see a GP and access key tests that boost their chances.
One in five tumours is still picked up in A&E when disease is likely to be incurable. But patients are up to 70 per cent more likely to beat breast cancer if picked up early.
The report by charity The Health Foundation calls for more and earlier routine checks.

Other ideas include getting tested without a GP referral for conditions such as lung cancer.
And while Theresa May has pledged 75 per cent of cancers will be spotted early by 2028 — up from 50 per cent — researchers warn extra staff and equipment are needed.
Currently, the UK ranks 27 out of 38 European countries for CT scanners, and 25 out of 27 for MRI machines.
Prof Helen Stokes-Lampard, of the Royal College of GPs, said: “GPs face harsh criticism if they refer too many patients to specialist care, and complaints if they don’t refer enough.

“What is desperately needed is for GPs to have better access to high quality diagnostic tools and the appropriate training to use them.”
Last night NHS England said: “The NHS now sees two million urgent GP referrals a year.
“Cancer survival rates are at their highest ever and work to ensure faster and earlier diagnosis and treatment is underway.”
