CALIFORNIA Ford has been slammed after a car dealership tried to flog “smoking hot deals” as the death toll from wildfires rose to 48.
The ad by the company’s Simi Valley dealership reads: “Well we didn’t catch fire but these deals are smoking hot. Take a look!”
Furious social media users described the November 11 ad as “distasteful” and “disgusting” in the midst of the deadliest wildfires in California’s history.
Paradise, a Butte County town of 27,000, was virtually destroyed overnight on Thursday, just hours after the blaze erupted.
52,000 people remain under evacuation orders as the disaster engulfs the state, with firefighters predicting that the blazes won’t be fully under control until the end of this month.
Reacting to the offensive ad, Twitter user @natalieegozi wrote: “Simi Valley Ford, you are disgusting!”.
Sasha added: “@Ford what the hell is this dealership doing? Almost makes me ashamed to own a Ford.
“People are burning to death in their vehicles and this is what simi valley ford thinks is good marketing”.
The dealership apologised in a second post, saying: “Hello Friends, Our advertising team picked a heading for this week’s campaign that appears to be insensitive to some.”
Other users criticised this approach, with Stanley writing: “Also, learn how to apologize, Simi Valley Ford. This ain’t it.”
On Tuesday morning, a spokesman for the dealership added to the apology, telling DailyMail.com: “Recently, we expressed ourselves in a way that does not reflect our values. We are sorry.
“Simi Valley is our home and, like all of us who live here, we will continue to assist during these difficult times.”
The dealership is located just to the north of the Woolsey Fire perimeter near Los Angeles, and northeast of the Hill fire.
