BARCELONA made a piece of unwanted history in their 3-4 defeat to Real Betis in the Camp Nou yesterday evening.
It was bad enough that they suffered the reverse – their first home loss in La Liga since they were beaten 2-1 by Alaves back in 2016.
But it was also the first time ever that the Catalan club has lost when their talisman Lionel Messi has scored two or more goals in a game.
The Argentinian couldn’t prevent the defeat, having returned to the side ahead of schedule after breaking a bone in his forearm last month.
He personally put in another impressive display, scoring from the spot in the 68th minute, setting up Arturo Vidal for Barca’s second, then netting their third in injury time.
Two Messi goals have always been enough for the Blaugrana to get a result in the past.

Not this time. Wasteful in front of goal in the first half, they allowed Betis to steam into a 2-0 lead before the break with goals from Junior and veteran winger Joaquin.
Going for all-out attack after the break, Barcelona were finally rewarded when Jordi Alba was clearly pulled back by Tello when breaking into the box.
Messi made no mistake with the penalty – but he found his side two goals behind once more just three minutes later, thanks to a howler from ‘keeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.
The German let a relatively innocuous effort from Lo Celso squirm between his hands, and it gently looped over his head into the Barca net.
Messi cued up Vidal for a simple goal to reduce the deficit, but the Catalans were given a mountain to climb in the 81st minute when Ivan Rakitic was sent off after collecting a second yellow card.
A minute later, Betis substitute Canales beat the offside trap by centimetres to poke home his side’s fourth goal of the match.
Messi’s stoppage time tap-in was merely a consolation – though it’s unlikely it would have even felt like that to the Argentinian.
He’ll know only too well that a little bit of unwanted history had been made – this was the very first time that he’d scored a brace, and Barcelona had lost.
