New photo South Korean ex-leader Lee gets 15-year term for bribery

A South Korean court has sentenced former President Lee Myung-bak to 15 years in prison over a slew of corruption charges.

The Seoul Central District Court issued the sentence on Friday after convicting Lee of bribery, embezzlement and other charges.

Lee, who posted a handwritten note on Facebook denying the most of the charges, has one week to appeal.

Former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has been found guilty of a host of corruption charges at a Seoul court and sentenced to 15 years in prison 

The 76-year-old served as president from 2008-2013 and has been held at a detention center in Seoul since his arrest in March.  

Before turning to politics, he was a successful businessman - eventually becoming the CEO Hyundai Engineering and Construction.

He also served a four-year term as the mayor of Seoul from July 2002, to June 2006.

Prosecutors claimed that Lee had accepted bribes of around 11 billion won (about 7 and a half million pounds)

He is married to Kim Yoon-ok, and the couple have three daughters and one son.

He was further accused of channeling assets worth 35 billion won to an illegal slush fund. 

His conviction is yet another blow to conservatives in South Korea. 

His conservative successor Park Geun-hye is serving a 33-year prison term over a separate corruption scandal.
