COMMUTERS were today handed a £1,400 boost as the Government announced tolls on the Severn crossing will be scrapped from December.
The £5.60 charge will end a week before Christmas – giving a helping hand to people driving home to their families.

The tolls have been in place on the Severn Bridge since it was built in 1966, and on the Prince of Wales Bridge since it opened in 1996.
The levy – which is up to £20 for lorries – is only paid by drivers heading west into Wales.
The Government claims that scrapping the toll on December 17 will save regular commuters as much as £1,400 a year.
A Cabinet source told The Sun: “Local residents will have a much easier time driving home for Christmas this year.”

Wales Secretary Alun Cairns announced details of the move at the Tory conference in Birmingham today.
He said: “Wales will be more open for business than ever after the Conservatives deliver on this commitment.
“Scrapping tolls before the festive period is an early Christmas present for hard-working commuters who will be £1,400 per year better off.”

Theresa May added: “By abolishing tolls for 25million annual journeys between two nations, the Conservatives are sending a positive, open for business message.
“Toll free, free flow journeys between both communities will drive further economic benefits to all areas surrounding the crossings and the key economic centres in Cardiff, Bath, Bristol, Newport and across to Swansea and West Wales.”
Ministers are able to abolish the tolls because the two bridges passed into public hands earlier this year.
