New photo Moment sacks of £1million cannabis haul are dragged out of Britain's 'biggest drug factory'

Sacks full of cannabis were dragged out of Britain's 'biggest drug factory' by police who found the substance hidden in tunnels at a disused quarry.

An estimated £1million haul of the drug was removed from a farm near Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire.

Police in protective suits and masks were pictured clearing the plants from the caves of an abandoned limestone quarry.

One officer, wearing a gas mask, was even pictured holding a brown bag full of cannabis as he walked out of the quarry.

The dark tunnels were discovered after a group of explorers noticed electricity trailing into the caves three years ago.

The tunnels form part of a former limestone quarry covering about 10 acres or 40,000 square metres.

Officers began exploring the mines after uncovering the drug den and said they are still discovering more places where cannabis was being grown.

Police said: 'We are not sure how big the factory is because there are significant safety issues.'

Inspector Nick Mawson added: 'Locals are likely to see police presence as officers gather evidence.

'This work is anticipated to carry on into next week due to the size of the location.'

In 2015 a group of explorers reported that the site had been closed for years, 'but recently we found it wide open. Not only open, but the electricity and lights were on.'

One explorer claimed he had been 'physically assaulted by some thug wielding a baseball bat, who accused them of breaking in'.

Sources say the farm at Bethel Quarry near Bradford-on-Avon, Wilts, could dwarf the previous biggest, found in an unrelated case 26 miles away at the former Chilmark nuclear bunker last year.

There are extensive mines and quarries in the Wiltshire Cotswolds that date back centuries and have been repurposed for everything from storing million pound bottles of vintage wine to a centre for British intelligence communications.

The mine complexes stretch from near Corsham and the famous Box Tunnel, down to near the town of Bradford on Avon.

Mining stopped at the end of the 19th Century and the tunnels were used by the War Office in 1939 to store naval equipment.

The former stone quarry is the perfect place to grow an illicit substance due to the fact its hidden deep below ground.

Tourists now flock to Bradford-on-Avon for its Roman villas.

Its most famous resident was Antiques Roadshow host Hugh Scully, who died aged 72 in 2015.

Alksander Shyti, 45 and Altin Deda, 39, were charged with the production of cannabis and were due to appear at Swindon Magistrates Court yesterday but interpreter issues meant it was postponed.
