SPARKS flew between Ellis Roper and Scott Walsh as they flirted over pints of beer on a balmy summer’s evening in 2014.
“We met in a pub through mutual friends. We got talking and really hit it off,” the 25-year-old account manager told Fabulous Online.
Over the next few months they started dating, enjoying trips to the pub and nights out clubbing.
But their summer romance was cut short after Scott, 28, dumped Ellis for a woman called Amber Flood, who he had dated previously.
“Scott had a relationship with Amber before we got together. After he ditched me, he hooked back up with her,” Ellis explained.
“They’d been seeing one another for a few years but broken up not long before we’d started dating. Up until that point I’d known nothing about Amber.
“I was really disappointed when it ended but I got over it… we hadn’t even been dating long so it wasn’t a huge blow.”
Summer passed and by December 2014, Ellis was long over Scott – thinking of their relationship as nothing more than a summer fling.
Then, over the festive period, Ellis received an ominous phone call.
It was Amber, Scott’s girlfriend, calling out-of-the-blue for details about her brief romance with her boyfriend.
“She’d found out he’d briefly dated me while on a break from their relationship and wanted to know all about it,” Ellis said.
“She asked me if it was true, and was quite emotional about it, but I didn’t think it was a big deal because Scott had been single at the time. I wouldn’t have dated him if he was seeing anyone else.”
The call made Ellis nervous because she learned her unintended love rival had a fearsome reputation.
“Amber’s known as someone you don’t get on the wrong side of,” she said. “She can be really unpleasant, to put it mildly.
“I heard on the grapevine through mutual friends that she was angry with me about dating Scott – even though she hadn’t been dating him at the time – so I did my level best to avoid her at all costs.
“Luckily we moved in different circles and generally went to different places so it wasn’t too hard.
“If there was a party on I’d make discreet enquiries to ensure we didn’t end up in the same room together.”
Ellis managed to dodge Amber for almost three years and had stopped thinking about her.
But on February 11, 2017, the pair found themselves in the same bar while out partying with separate groups of friends.
“My friends and I fancied a night out at the pub in Oxford,” Ellis explained. “It was a really chilled night out and I was dressed really casually in just a top, skirt and boots.
“We weren’t planning a heavy evening and I wasn’t drunk. It was my mate’s birthday but it was a really nice evening. We had a lovely time and it was good fun.”
Ellis and her friends were having fun when she spotted Amber.
She wasn’t nervous at that stage – it had been nearly three years since her relationship with Scott had ended.
Happily, nothing happened, and a few hours later Ellis and her friends headed to another bar.
Once again Amber was there. “But she was drunk by this point,” said Ellis. “And I couldn’t believe what happened next.”
Presumably angry about her previously dating Scott – who Amber is still with – Amber, 28, poured a drink over Ellis then slashed her face so severely she had glass embedded in her skin and she needed 30 stitches.
Ellis recalled: “Amber was in the corner of the sitting area at about 11.30pm so I guessed there was a chance she’d had a drink.
“I decided the best thing to do was arrange a cab with my friends and get out of there.
“We were just finishing a cigarette when she literally charged at me and launched her drink in my face.”
But – despite suffering a horrific wound – she can’t remember exactly what happened.
“I think I went into shock,” she said. “It’s bizarre, but I didn’t feel anything, I just remember seeing this martini glass coming towards me and then being soaked.
“There was blood everywhere but I didn’t realise how badly I was injured. It was all a blur.
“Amber was led away by bouncers and as I came back out through the bar my friends were gasping in shock and saying I needed to go to hospital.
“I saw blood dripping from my face and even then I didn’t realise how bad it was – I thought she’d maybe just caught me with a ring or something.”
A taxi took Ellis to Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital where X-rays revealed shards of glass embedded in her cheek.
She had 30 stitches in her wound before spending the night at a friend’s house.
It wasn’t until the next morning that the reality of her injuries hit home.
“I just burst into tears,” she said. “I saw the police and told them everything.
“I couldn’t believe a relationship that ended years earlier with a man who was single led to me being glassed”
Amber, 28, of Oxford, was arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.
Last month at Oxford Crown Court she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of wounding without intent to cause grievous bodily harm, which was accepted by the court.
She was jailed for 20 months and told to pay damages.
Now Ellis is still anxious about the attack. “It’s over a year now since it happened, I’m lucky in a way that I have thick, brown hair to cover the scar, but I can never really wear my hair up again, the scar’s too visible,” she said.
“I’ll have it forever – a constant reminder of what Amber did to me – all for dating someone she wasn’t even seeing at the time.
“I’m very anxious since the attack, especially when I’m out and about. I’m really careful about where I go and who is there. I only feel comfortable when I have my close friends around me.
“I’m not a violent person at all so the thought someone could do this to me is shocking.”
Judge Zoe Smith said: “It was a terrible injury to her face, it’s had a devastating impact on Miss Roper, and psychological harm has been caused.
“She will suffer permanent scarring for the rest of her life.”
