Two swimmers drowned in New Jersey while trying to rescue another man who was later saved by police, authorities said.

The men were all swimming in Thornes Creek in Hazlet when one of them started yelling for help at around 2.40pm on Sunday, according to a fourth man who was also swimming, and called 911.

One of the victims has been identified by family as Mark Gorski.

Gorski and the other man went to help the one who was struggling, but submerged before help arrived and didn't resurface, the fourth man told the Hazlet Township Police Department.

'#MCSONJ & @sheriffgolden's heartfelt thoughts go out to family members of both swimmers who drowned in [the] creek off the Henry Hudson trail,' the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office tweeted on Sunday.

Detectives with Halzet PD did not immediately return a message from DailyMail.com inquiring as to the identity of the second victim.

Police soon found the first swimmer near the water's edge. He was taken to a hospital.

The bodies of Gorski and the second victim were found later on Sunday, by divers from the sheriff's office's Meritime Emergency Response Team.

The sheriff's office tweeted that while the outcome was tragic, the victims were located through a combined effort from local emergency responders.
