New photo Liverpool vs PSG: Jurgen Klopp faces nightmare fixture list but ignore Gary Neville – now is not the time to ditch the Champions League dream

JURGEN Klopp has been delighted by Liverpool’s start to the season.

Five wins out of five, culminating in a dismissal of Spurs at Wembley that was far more complete than the narrow scoreline suggested.

As statements of intent go, the Anfield outfit could not have bellowed much louder.

But Klopp knows that the true test of his side and their ambitions start now.

Six matches in 19 days, starting against Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and the rest of the superstars the sovereign wealth of the state of Qatar have brought to Paris St-Germain.

And finished with the nine-day blitz that sees trips to Chelsea and Napoli before Manchester City come to Anfield, scene of their double undressing last season, on October 7.

The Liverpool fans, already excited by Klopp’s summer recruitment drive, are understandably beginning to dream of a first championship win since 1990.

Yet this is a run of matches that will test Klopp’s men further than they have been tested so far, the true measure of the depth of quality at the German’s disposal.

So many games, coming thick and fast, will probably bring casualties, too.

They may have to learn to cope, and win, without one or two of Klopp’s guaranteed starters.

May have to trust in Daniel Sturridge, Dejan Lovren, or Alberto Moreno, risk Adam Lallana’s state of body.

Might need to call on Simon Mignolet.

That list of names, the men in reserve, does question, perhaps, the genuine quality across Klopp’s squad, certainly in comparison to the riches at Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City disposal.

That is, perhaps, why Gary Neville suggested the Merseysiders may have to prioritise, to decide whether they want to target domestic glory or put all of their eggs into the basket of going just one step further than they did in Kiev in May.

Klopp’s angry retort was a signal that he knows the question will keep coming back if Liverpool do show any signs of faltering.

But if you are going to dream, you should dream big. Dream bold.

Yes, injuries are likely, if not inevitable. It is about coping with them.

And Klopp, for sure, will know that, if he were to give Europe up as a task too far, to instead concentrate on trying to end that 28-year wait for the title, and still fall short, he will have wasted all the work done to make the top four last time.

It is only September. Yes, a few points dropped now could be critical at the end of the season.

But they will not seem critical until the business end of the season. When it is all about dealing with the pressure of the situation.

In addition, an early Champions League exit would be a serious and significant morale blow – especially as Liverpool would surely end up going into the more draining knock-out stage of the Europa League.

Of course, there is a period when priorities can be chosen. March, April and May, normally. Then, if the title is gone, you might go all-in for Europe.

But not in the early autumn.

Liverpool, for all their bright start and burgeoning belief, may still end up with nothing.

Yet Klopp is not the sort to ask his players to take a step backwards. He wants to drive them on.

The two big trophies are there, shimmering in the distance.

His first team is good enough. He knows that.

The message should be a simple one: More of the same boys. Only better. We can do this.
