"Many Photos" - Wedding guest is left stunned after the bride says the $275 gift she bought wasn't expensive enough

A wedding guest has been left 'speechless' after the bride said her $275 (£150) gift wasn't expensive enough - and demanded a further $300 (£160).

The Australian woman, who posted about the confrontation in an online wedding shaming group, attended her friend's wedding with $200 (£110) cash and a small designer candle that cost $75 (£40).

But the bride said her and her husband's attendance alone cost the newlyweds $500 (£270), so she should give them another $300 (£160) to make it fair.

'I've just hung up the phone from a friend (ex-friend now!) whose wedding was a few weekends ago,' the anonymous woman said.

'She had a beautiful wedding, lots of guests, lots of wine and food. There were even fireworks when she and her new hubby left (via yacht) to go on their honeymoon.

'She was ringing people thanking them for coming to her wedding. Sweet right? Wrong.'

The phone call saw the bride suggest that 'the cost of having my husband and I was far more than the miserly gift we gave'.

Telling the forum that her friend has always been quick to judge and can come across as 'tone deaf rude', she did start to think that the card with the cash was stolen, to garner this kind of reaction.

But it hadn't been.

'At first I thought she was being sarcastic and joking, but she was serious. She didn't consider the candle a real gift because she "can't do anything with it" and "it wasn't the big one that she wanted".'

The larger designer candle was an eye watering $150 and out of the guests' price range.

She allowed the bride to nag for a further five minutes because she was left speechless after the request for more cash.

'I'm from Australia and it's not common to give gifts that relate to the cost of you attending the wedding,' she said.

'Though it's normal in some cultures, it's not a thing I've encountered. The $200 cash is a lot of money for the average person to give here.'

The comments underneath the thread were dismissive of the bride's request.

'Throw the whole friend away, that's trashy to have done that,' one person said.

'You can't charge admissions for your wedding. You don't owe the bride anything,' another said.

A third added: 'Why would people expect you to pay a huge amount just to cover the costs of their extravagant party?'
