SYDNEY Airport ground to a halt this morning after smoke was detected inside the air traffic control tower – leading to an evacuation.
All air controllers were told to leave at around 11.40am local time (12:40am GMT) and firefighters rushed to the scene.
They later gave the all clear after around an hour.
An Air Services Australia spokeswoman said a full ground stop had been in place.
During the shutdown, she said: “No aircraft are departing or arriving at this time.”
Firefighters said 20 people needed to be evacuated from the tower.
Airlines and airport staff notified passengers as hundreds sat on the tarmac waiting for their planes to take off.
Status screens in Sydney Airport also informed waiting passengers of delays.
They read: “Flight delayed due to Sydney Tower evacuation.”
Flight maps showed dozens of aircraft waiting on the runway.

Traffic control staff were later allowed back in the building after firefighters deemed it safe.
Air Service Australia tweeted: “UPDATE: 12:37 – Firefighters have cleared staff to return to the Tower.
“We expect to be operational in the next 10 mins.”
