"Many Photos" - Spot the join! Metal sections are so precisely engineered that they seamlessly interlock

A meticulous type of metal engineering has allowed for such precise cutting that metal blocks seamlessly merge together.

Mesmerising footage shows intricately cut metal blocks being joined together and seamlessly blending without any trace of their initial separation.

Other footage shows a metal block with angular metal cutouts resting on top of it.

When the cutouts are perfectly aligned with the slots in the metal block below they seem to sink down and melt in to each other.

The seamless joins are created using electrical discharge machining (EDM) which allows for a much more precise cut than with traditional cutting methods.

Thanks to a heated spark of electricity which is controlled over the surface of a metal, extremely precise cuts are possible.

EDM techniques are usually used to create artificial bones or aeroplane parts because it's the only way to achieve such a precise cut.

This electric spark produces intense heat with temperatures reaching 8,000 to 12,000 degrees Celsius (14,000 to 21,500°F), melting almost anything.

WHAT IS ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING?

The basic electrical discharge machining (EDM) process is relatively simple.

An electrical spark is created between an electrode - an electrical conductor - and the item being machined.

The spark is visible evidence of the flow of electricity.

This electric spark produces intense heat with temperatures reaching 8,000 to 12,000 degrees Celsius (14,000 to 21,500°F), melting almost anything.

The spark is very carefully controlled so that it only affects the surface of the material.

The EDM process usually does not affect anything below the surface, which means the cuts it makes are smooth and seamless.
