A DEBT-ridden couple sold their twins to separate families for a total of £13,500 to pay off loan sharks.

Cops in China have now rescued the twins, a boy and girl, after they were pawned off just two months after they were born in September 2017.

The babies’ parents, Lan and Feng, who live in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, racked up huge debts from an online lending platform and came up with the desperate plan to earn some cash, cops said.

They sold the little boy and girl for £6,760 each to two families in Hebei province, almost 800km (492 miles) away from home.

The couple are understood to have used social networking site Qzone to find potential buyers.

Police were notified about the illegal sale more than a year later in December 2018.

The baby girl was rescued by Chifeng police on February 28 in Xingtai city and her brother was rescued on March 2 in Langfang city, state-broadcaster CCTV said.

Officers arrested the dad on January 22 at a local karaoke bar.

The next day, officers also arrested the mum at a motel.

The couple admitted to selling the twins just two months after they were born to settle their debts

“We owed so much money. We didn’t have any income at all,” the dad told officers during an interrogation at a police station.

“We weren’t able to borrow money anywhere. We couldn’t afford to raise them.”

The couple used the money from the sales to pay back the loan sharks.

“I did a horrible thing, ethically. I hurt myself and I hurt others,” he said. “I have let my two children down.”

The mum said: “We really didn’t have a choice. I know it was wrong. But at the same time, the babies won’t suffer with us.”
