"Many Photos" - Chef fights back against vegan activists who stormed his Michelin-starred Mayfair restaurant

A top chef smirked as he showed two dead ducks to animal rights activists who stormed his Michelin-starred restaurant in a vegan protest.

Direct Action Everywhere (DXE) campaigners descended on The Square in Mayfair, central London, to demonstrate against its use of foie gras.

But their demonstration was disrupted when a man believed to be executive chef Clément Leroy brandished two dead ducks at them.

The activists chanted 'it’s not food, it’s violence' as they exited the upmarket restaurant.

One activist said: 'This guy seemed to be proud of the cruelty involved.

'He was waving dead bodies around far from the food preparation area. I’m sure local food safety officers will be interested in his actions.'

Protesters also targeted So Japanese restaurant in Soho as well as Fortnum and Mason for their sale of foie gras.

Preparing the animal to be served as such requires the force-feeding of ducks and geese to expand their livers many times past their natural size.

A DXE spokesman said: 'DXE is a worldwide animal rights organisation which promotes peaceful protests to wake society up to the cruelty and suffering involved in meat, dairy, fish and egg production. We aim to awaken people’s compassion in order to bring about a vegan world.'

The Square is a Michelin star restaurant that specialises in 'modern haute' cuisine. Clément Leroy is currently their executive chef. The Square has been contacted for comment.

Though he was purported to be a carnivore protesting against vegans, he showed no sign of enjoying the bizarre snack outside VegFest 2019 four days ago.

And he was soon surrounded by DXE members holding signs arguing that meat is murder and eating it is violence.

It follows several 'direct action' protests by the pro-vegan group in the city, including marching into a restaurant with 'meat is murder' signs, and blocking shoppers' access to food in a supermarket.
