"Many Photos" - Britain's loneliest cat Twizzle has been at Battersea Cats and Dogs Home for 125 days

Britain's loneliest cat spent his eight birthday with staff at the rehome centre he has lived at for 125 days.

The adorable Twizzle, eight, has been at the Battersea Cats and Dogs Home in south London for months now and celebrated his birthday at the centre.

Cats usually stay at the home for 23 days before they are taken in by another person or family - and staff hope Twizzle will soon be taken in too.

Battersea's Cattery Team Leader, Rosa Steele believes that Twizzle might be overlooked because of the virus he suffers from.

Twizzle has Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, which is usually transmitted by deep bite wounds.

Cats can become extremely ill from the infection, though most live long lives without any issues.

Ms Steele told the Sun: 'Twizzle is such a lovely cat and it's a huge shame that he has been waiting for so long to find a home.

'He is an intelligent, playful cat and has a lot to offer as a pet.

'What better birthday gift could you give one of our cats than a loving new home?'

Cats with FIV have to be kept in enclosed gardens or indoors to prevent the spread.

Twizzle's page on the Battesea centre's website reads: 'Twizzle turned up at his finder's house one day last autumn, scared and hungry and not able to fend for himself very well.

'Before long he had got himself wounded in the face and they kindly took him to a vet for treatment, after which they brought him to Battersea. He was not sure of new people at first, but he has come far since this and made lots of friends with his playful and affectionate nature - and he does love to sit on the laps of his special pals.'
