New photo YouTube warns against Bird Box-style prank videos risky memes rage

YouTube has banned people from posting videos of dangerous pranks, following a series of video challenges inspired by Netflix film Bird Box.

These challenges involved performing tasks blindfolded including driving a car, running and even a tattoo artist working on a client while driving.

One US teenager crashed her car after pulling her hat over her eyes and drivign towards oncoming traffic in the name of the so-called 'Bird Box Challenge'.

Youtube have already forbid content containing dangerous activities but have now revealed new policies on videos that put people in danger.

In the film, Sandra Bullock plays a woman who constantly wears a blindfold to avoid seeing mysterious forces that force people to commit suicide.

The film inspired some fans to set up #BirdBoxChallenge, leading creators to run into walls or come dangerously close to traffic.

Last year, an awareness campaign was launched after a potentially fatal challenge to eat Tide detergent pods went viral, leading to teens being poisoned.

Youtube creators have been using the platform for variety of challenges - such as the ice bucket challenge to raise money for charity. But one dangerous trend inspired by Netflix show Bird Box is where users are encouraged to drive while blindfolded

The new clarifications 'make it clear that challenges like the Tide pod challenge, that can cause death and/or have caused death in some instances, have no place on YouTube,' the company wrote in a blog post.

'We've made it clear that our policies prohibiting harmful and dangerous content also extend to pranks with a perceived danger of serious physical injury.'

'That said, we've always had policies to make sure what's funny doesn't cross the line into also being harmful or dangerous.'

While playful challenges or pranks have become raging trends online, with video shared at YouTube or Facebook, some 'memes' have put people in jeopardy.

WHAT IS YOUTUBE'S POLICY ON NUDITY?

YouTube does not allow pornography on the site.

It says that videos containing fetish content will be removed or age-restricted depending on the severity of the act in question.

Violent, graphic or humiliating fetishes are also not allowed to be shown on YouTube.

However, a 'video that contains nudity or other sexual content may be allowed if the primary purpose is educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic, and it isn't gratuitously graphic', the company guidelines say.

'Videos featuring individuals in minimal or revealing clothing may also be age-restricted if they're intended to be sexually provocative, but don't show explicit content.'
