What did Michael Gove say?

Environment Secretary Michael Gove slammed the Labour Party’s Brexit policy in the House of Commons.

And he did not mince his words.

Referencing reports that shadow international trade secretary Barry Gardiner had referred his own party’s official Brexit position in the same way, Mr Gove said he agreed.

Did he really call Labour’s Brexit policy ‘b*****ks’?

Yes, he certainly did.

The outburst shocked many MPs

Mr Gove said: “There are distinguished citizens in this country who have put on their cars a poster or sticker saying ‘B*****ks to Brexit’ — but we now know from Labour’s own front bench that their official position is (the same).”

MPs wanted him punished but Speaker John Bercow said it was a matter of taste.

What words can you not say in the Common’s chamber?

Most swear words or any language which breaks the rules of politeness in the House of Commons Chamber.

The MP who used the naughty word would be withdraw it.

Refusal to do this might lead to the member being disciplined for example the Speaker could “name” them — a term for temporarily suspending a foul mouthed politician.

Offending words over the years have included blackguard, coward, guttersnipe, git, hooligan, rat, swine, stoolpigeon and traitor.
