The Dutch public have been warned not to lie on bombs after a man dived on a World War II device for about three hours.

Xavier Lucassen came across an unexploded weapon while walking his dog in a communal garden in the town of Venlo, in the south of country, on Wednesday.

When it started whistling the 45-year-old covered it with his body in an attempt to restrict the damage if it went off.

After he found the device, he had tried to cover it up again with sand but then put his arm over it.

Even after the whistling stopped he did not dare move, but used his mobile phone to call emergency services, security services spokeswoman Veronique Klaassen said.

A defence ministry bomb disposal service (EOD) team was called in to remove the device.

Neighbouring residents were evacuated from their homes and the bomb, described as a grenade or a shell, proved harmless.

Lucassen told the Dutch media he saw the device when his dog, Spyky, went into the bushes and he decided to put his forearm on it when it started to 'sizzle'.

He told De Telegraaf: 'I also only had a T-shirt and a cardigan on. It was very cold, even though I was warm inside because of fear.

'There were a lot of crazy things going through my mind. But I finally got away. What a relief.

'I longed for a hot shower and then I ate two large bowls of soup.'

The grenade turned out to be a high-explosive grenade from the Second World War that contained no explosive material.

But police warned the public it is 'strictly ill-advised to lie down on a bomb', if anyone else sees a similar device.

Lucassen was treated for the symptoms of hypothermia after hours lying in the freezing winter cold as the explosive ordinance team did not arrive until the early hours of yesterday morning.

The team had to travel nearly 93 miles (149.3 km) from Utrecht to Venlo on the German border and did not arrive until 1am.

Klaassen added: 'The EOD team must have come some distance, as they arrived around 1am to free the man from his delicate position.

'It is strictly ill-advised to lie down on a bomb.

'The best thing to if you come across an explosive device is keep your distance and call the police.'
