THEY were bosom buddies for Arsenal and France. Close friends and near neighbours…
The twin heartbeats of the Invincibles and the side which dominated international football around the turn of the century.

But tomorrow Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira go head to head as managers for the first time.
Both know that what happens when Nice play Monaco only has immediate importance on the Ligue 1 table.
Yet while Unai Emery has been brought in to manage the Arsenal transition from the Arsene Wenger era, both Henry and Vieira harbour long-term ambitions to follow the Spaniard into the Emirates home dug-out.
And it will not just be Gunners fans who watch for signs of which Arsenal legend might be the better choice to become a future boss of the club.

SunSport looks at what Vieira and Henry have done so far as they move into the next phase of their football careers – and suggests who is ahead at the moment.
Managerial experience
Vieira prepared for his move back to France with two seasons at New York City, where it seemed he was being groomed for a role at the Etihad.
Henry worked under Roberto Martinez with Belgium, helping them reach the World Cup semi-finals but is finding the top job a tough one.

Charisma

Both were leaders but very different in style.
Vieira was the understated assassin at the heart that Wenger machine, an irresistible force on the pitch but who seemed almost introverted off the pitch, although he was not shy at speaking out when he felt it was required.
Henry was as much a captivating figure in front of the microphones as he was when he laced up his boots. An inspiration for his team-mates and fans alike.
Status
Henry’s reputation as a player means expectations on him as a manager might be higher, making it harder for him to cope with those who are unable to turn his plans into reality.
That two-year education in the MLS means Vieira arrived at Nice more fully formed as a coach.
Man management
Vieira always believed in leading by example, not afraid to call out his team-mates when required but more likely to simply show them the way.
That might be a more suitable managerial skill with big questions in France over Henry’s press conference prowess, when it seems he is too prone to criticising players suffering a tough time.
Tactical nous

Henry has suffered with an injury crisis in addition to inheriting a callow squad already facing an unexpected survival scrap.
But he has been accused of changing systems and personnel on a whim almost every game, with the resulting lack of consistency at the manager’s door.
Vieira has taken a team that finished eight last season and has them in the same spot this time, just outside the European slots.
Only one defeat in last nine games and building round a core of eight or nine players.
Media savvy
Not that it means anything if you are winning games but Vieira’s more reflective approach to the cameras and tape recorders shows a calmness not always apparent as Henry switches to hyper-mode.
Henry can talk for France – and the rest of Europe too – but he has allowed himself to get carried away with dressing room complaints.
X Factor

When it comes to Arsenal, both would be welcomed back as returning heroes.
Henry, the greatest striker in Arsenal history, might find it easier to recruit those who can still find all those great goals on YouTube.
But perhaps Vieira is developing, already, as the more obvious choice, willing to listen, learn and improve.
Less likely to lose his temper, too. Although don’t get too close if he does.
Verdict
An exclusive SunSport poll found Vieira is the preferred choice among Arsenal fans with 57 per cent of the vote.
