Six people have been killed after a tarpaulin from a Carlsberg freight train flew into a passenger train on a bridge linking the central Danish islands of Zealand and Funen.

The tarpaulin reportedly caused the passenger train to brake suddenly.

Danish police confirmed 16 others were injured in the accident and that the passenger train had struck an 'unknown object' but would not elaborate further.

The train was heading from the Funen city of Odense to the capital, Copenhagen, on Zealand.

Denmark's TV2 showed images of a freight train with the tarpaulin that covered the train torn in pieces.

There were 131 passengers and three employees aboard the train, according to DR.

The Danish broadcaster said that police were urging survivors to contact their loved ones to let them know they are safe.

Police set up an evacuation centre in a nearby sports centre to shelter passengers.

The Storebaelt or Great Belt Bridge is part of bridges and tunnel link between the Danish islands.

Thousands of the commuters make the journey across the bridge everyday; Copenhagen is situated on Zealand.

Danish police are expected to hold a press conference later today.
