It is a maddening phenomenon familiar to as many as one in three householders in Britain.
Your mobile phone supposedly offers you the freedom to call from wherever you want – yet you can’t even get a decent signal in your own home without going to extremes like leaning out of the window or going to the bottom of the garden.
Now help could be at hand thanks to a ruling by the industry regulator Ofcom. Recognising the all-too-familiar frustration, it has given permission for home signal boosters – banned when it was feared they could interfere with local transmitters – to be installed.
Poor reception: Households are now allowed to use home signal boosters
Devices are coming on to the market at a cost of around £400 including an aerial that can go in the loft.
Rory Stoves, a technology expert at comparison website uSwitch, says: ‘Poor mobile phone reception is the bane of many people’s lives – with up to a third of all homes suffering problems.
‘The network providers are keen to boast how their networks cover 99 per cent of the population. But they fail to point out that this is a geographical finding. It means you may well have to sit on the house roof to receive the level of service that they claim you are able to get.’
Cel-Fi sells a £399 kit that has an aerial connected to a box which is placed at a point in the home so it can broadcast the best phone reception signal.
But the booster is not the only gadget on the market that can help. Others, including the £75 EE Signal Box and £69 Vodafone Sure Signal V3, work by extending existing signals around the home rather than increasing phone network coverage.
These devices allow a phone call to extend the traditional mobile signal – such as 3G – using separate internet communications technology.
The downside is that if you are moving around the house then the moment a phone switches from a mobile network signal to using the extension technology the call may cut off. Plugging the device into a spare broadband router socket and placing it in the open – not behind a thick wall or in a cupboard – means reception throughout the home should improve.
The main network suppliers – including Three, O2, EE and Vodafone – provide details of the mobile reception you might expect in your area on their websites. You can also visit websites such as Check My Postcode to find out the signal strength that you should expect.
When it comes to choosing a network provider, it is key to pick one that offers you the best reception in your home. With a phone contract, be wary of being tied into a lengthy deal before you know what the signal is really like.
Even something as simple as turning a mobile phone on and off can occasionally sort out a reception problem.
A ‘network status checker’ can also be used by visiting your provider website to see if there are temporary problems with mobile reception masts in your area.
It is also worth checking that you do not have a faulty handset or SIM card before investing in technology to improve reception.
