MORE than half of stolen cars are never returned to their owners, new figures have revealed.
Freedom of information requests show UK police weren’t able to recover 55 per cent of cars stolen over the past 10 years.
Conducted by AutoExpress, the study revealed police were only able to retrieve 236,636 of the 522,214 vehicles stolen between 2009 and 2018.
And just 40 per cent of stolen cars were returned to owners in 2018, making it the worst return rate in the ten year period.
In comparison, in 2015, 50 per cent of stolen vehicles were recovered and returned to their owners – a high over the ten year period.
The decline in recovery rates is thought to be associated with a major drop in police numbers, with 20,000 officers leaving the force since 2010.

Meanwhile, Merseyside Police recovered 75 per cent of the stolen vehicles, followed by Northumbria and Greater Manchester with 69 per cent and 57 per cent, respectively.
Simon Williams, RAC insurance spokesperson, told AutoExpress: “Drivers might be surprised to discover that on average less than half of vehicles stolen from these police force areas end up being recorded as recovered, with the proportion in some parts of the country far lower than this.
“Combine this with the fact that vehicle thefts are actually increasing and a rather alarming picture is painted.”
