New photo Model slammed for ‘blonde Barbie bombshell’ role at trade show hits backs calling job ‘harmless’

A MODEL hit back at critics who slammed her “blonde Barbie bombshell” role and says it was “harmless”.

Melissa Sharp said she had a “great time” as one of the trade show models at the Lamma show in Birmingham.

She modelled for agricultural firm Agrifac, which encouraged visitors to take selfies with visitors.

Estate manager David Hill, who wasn’t at the event, told BBC Radio 4 it felt “like a backward step”.

Ms Sharp objected and tweeted that she was there to “promote the brand and to engage with customers as anyone does at a normal job”.

She said that her job was “harmless”.

The criticism comes as Formula 1 announced there would be no more grid girls and the Professional Darts Corporation announced it would scrap using walk-on girls last year.

During the exhibition Agrifac shared pictures of the models posing with competition winners in front of agricultural machinery.

Ms Sharp added that other women seemed happy to see them at the event because they “brightened up the day”.

She added: “People referring to us as blonde Barbie bombshells with no brain cells is disgusting.”

Another critic was Kate Lord, a farm park manager from Gloucestershire, blasted that it was “an insult to women” who work in the industry.

She tweeted: “It’s 2019 for goodness sake @AgrifacUKLtd. What an embarrassment for our industry and an insult to the women who work in it.”

However, another Twitter user congratulated the firm and said: “Provides a talking point, gets your brand noticed and it’s harmless fun.”

The women were hired by Agrifac from promotional company Fan Xperience.

Managing Director Zoe Rutherford told the BBC: “These women are professionals who did a really good job and got a positive reaction from the people who were there.

“The negativity from people, many of whom weren’t at the event, has been really unfortunate.

“It is inappropriate for women to be told they are wearing the wrong thing. Women should be allowed to wear what they want to wear.”

F1 bosses had said they planned plan to use budding racing drivers in a bid to make the sport more interesting and inclusive to a younger audience.

Sean Bratches, managing director of commercial operations, said the change would be made “so as to be more in tune with our vision for this great sport'”

It followed a debate raging in darts about walk-on girls, after the PDC ditched the models accompanying competitors to the oche earlier this year.

A PDC spokesperson said: “This move has been made following feedback from host broadcasters.”
