New photo Missing grandfather, and young man, 24, fall 100ft from a bridge within moments of one another

Two men fell 100ft to their deaths from a bridge within moments of each other in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The two men were not known to each other, and it is not thought they made a suicide pact to jump from the Humber Bridge - which links Hessle in East Yorkshire to Barton in North Lincolnshire - into the estuary below at the same time.

Police have not released the name of either man but one is feared to be a missing grandfather from Grimsby, in his 40s, and the other Sam Conlin, 24, from Hull.

Mr Conlin had been depressed and the cameras of the Humber Bridge Board, which watches the mile-and-a-half long suspension bridge, recorded him walking onto the bridge from the northern end shortly before 4am.

His father Ian said: 'We know it was Sam on the bridge, it was definitely him because they got him on camera.

'The police were tracking him, but then another man, an older man, stopped his car further up the bridge and jumped off - and they had to deal with that.

'When they turned the camera back round, Sam was not on the bridge.'

The cameras had been switched to monitor an incident at the other end of he bridge's long span.

A man had driven onto the bridge, got out of his car and walked to the railing.

Humberside police arrived at 3.50am and spoke to the man. In a statement released this afternoon the force said: 'despite their best efforts, our officers were unable to stop him from falling'.

Police believe the timing and location of the two incidents was coincidental.

Both cases are still being treated as missing persons cases but Mr Conlin, 55, is convinced his son is dead.

He said 'There is no doubt that Sam is dead after jumping from the Humber Bridge. Obviously, the police cannot confirm it until they find his body.'

Ian Conlin said his son had been fighting depression for years and had insecurities about his looks, but had only recently opened up about his mental health problems to his family.

The young man left a note saying he 'couldn't go on' following a secret eight year-long mental health battle.

His father said 'We will never know why Sam took his own life.

'The note, which was addressed to the family, said 'I know it's going to hurt you forever, but I just cannot go on any longer.'

'We only found out that he was struggling with mental health three months ago, but we never thought he was suicidal.'

Mr Conlin went on: 'I just want to say if other young people are reading this and feeling suicidal or depressed then speak or talk to your parents - talk to anyone. They will help you get through whatever it is you are going through.

'We just feel like Sam didn't even give us a chance for us to help him, but it might not be too late for someone else.'

Paying moving tribute to his son, the 55-year-old said: 'Sam was just an unbelievable and lovable person. By the comments online, it just proves how well-loved and well-liked Sam was and how we, as a family, were so, so proud of him.

'He was our everything, he was just brilliant and a fantastic son - but this will stick with us forever, every day I will think about it.'

The family said Sam had 'acted like nothing was wrong' and had paid for his parents to go to London and enjoy a West End show as their Christmas present.

He had joined the pair in the capital a week before Christmas, and just hours before falling to his death he stopped in on them for tea, saying he was 'looking forward to being with his friends'.

Ian Conlin said he thought Sam had thought out and planned to take his own life.

Humberside Police confirmed the missing man from Grimsby was last seen on the south side of the Humber Bridge shortly before 4am on Saturday, the same time Mr Conlin said his son was being monitored on camera.

A spokesman said 'Shortly before 4am on Saturday, our officers attended to a concern for safety at the south side of the Humber Bridge following reports that a man in his 40s from Grimsby had entered the water.

'Search teams were deployed to search the river and area however the man has not been located. The man's next of kin has been informed and will be supported by specially-trained officers.'

No name or photograph of the older man has been released by police, who have not issued an appeal in is missing persons case.

Police have confirmed the two cases are still being treated as missing persons inquires and no bodies have been found despite extensive searches which involved the Coastguard helicopter based at Humberside Airport, Humber Rescue, police and coastguard officers.
