MAURICIO POCHETTINO has warned Tottenham he must be given cash if he is to keep up with his rivals – and admitted he would love to pick Arsene Wenger’s brain.
The Spurs manager’s admission is the biggest hint yet that he is still weighing up whether to join Manchester United this summer.
The Spurs’ boss – who once again insisted he is happy in north London – does not expect to land a signing this month with the club’s money tied up building their new stadium.
Manchester United target Poch said: “It’s one thing reducing the gap with the top four.
“But if we want to be real contenders, we need to operate in a different way.
“At the moment we operate in the same way as we operated in five years ago when we arrived.
“Maybe we can win some titles but it’s going to be a tough job to do because in that situation every club in the last five years was improving a lot.
“That is the point when sometimes people talk about winning titles.
“One thing is to reduce the gap with the top four, to be competitive, to create a team capable of fighting with the big sides.
“The other day I saw a stat that in the last 10 years in England and in Europe how the teams were spending money, and I think we were on the bottom, in England and Europe.

United are desperate to lure Poch to Old Trafford this summer but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will fight tooth and nail to keep the Argentine – who is contracted until 2023 on a deal worth £8.5million a year.
Poch added: “Like what happened with Arsene Wenger, when Arsenal were building the new stadium, you have a lot of limitations and the people demand you win – but you don’t have the same tools to fight with other clubs.
“It is going to be fantastic, but the most important thing that I accept that challenge when Daniel Levy called me to offer a contract here.
“He was clear – him and (owner) Joe Lewis. And they said, ‘Mauricio, you need to prepare and to help the club to arrive to the new stadium. In the first season at the new stadium, (we need) to have a team that can finish in the top four in the season after’.
“But we are so ambitious and we have the ambition to win. I think we are in an amazing position. The club is finishing one of the best stadiums in the world.”
The Argentinian is also keen to discover if his old rival has any regrets about remaining at the Gunners for so long which should most concern Levy and their fans.
Frenchman Wenger, 69, left the Emirates last summer having taken over in 1996.
Pochettino had one eye on tonight’s Carabao Cup semi- final first leg with Chelsea at Wembley. But he said: “I have massive, huge respect for Arsene Wenger.
“When you talk about 22 years in charge of a club like Arsenal, all that happened in that period, you need to be so good. Not only a fantastic coach but a great human being to display the
values you have. It’s amazing.
“That is why it is a little bit sad the way it ended at his club. It shows how difficult it is in this business.
“But for us it is not just a business, it is a passion.
“All that Arsene Wenger gave for Arsenal, to finish in the way it finished, yes, it was a little bit unfair.
“I think he deserves amazing recognition for his work.

“I only hope, if I have the opportunity to talk with him, I can ask ‘Was it worth it?’. I would like to ask one day.”
When you consider all Pochettino could ask Wenger about his managerial career, the revelation that what he would like to know most is whether it was worth staying in North London should set
alarm bells ringing even at Tottenham’s new stadium — were it in working order.
The parallels between Spurs at the moment and Arsenal under Wenger are closer than either side cares to admit.
Asked if there are similarities between him and Wenger, Poch said: “Yes, yes. It’s true but it will only be my fifth year.
“It’s true we work and we know the reality. Sometimes we cannot expect other people to live the same reality, or have the same knowledge about what happens inside.
“I wish to be here for 20 years and decide to leave, or to finish my career here.
“I don’t know because I need to ask Arsene one day, if I have the possibility, if he is so happy in the way he finished.
“What I saw from my point of view, it was so unfair how the people treated him and talked. But we’ll see.”

Pochettino can only dream of Wenger’s honours list at Arsenal — three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.
Spurs have no silverware since the League Cup in 2008.
Poch added: “It is about the new stadium, finishing the project. It is going to be a massive legacy for the club, for the fans, for the players in the future, for the new coaching staff,
manager. It is going to be fantastic to have this possibility to work here in those facilities.”
