New photo M6 closed as police declare ‘major incident’ and search lorries leaving Man City and Burton Albion fans stuck in jams

HUNDREDS of football fans are currently stuck in long tailbacks on the M6 due to an ongoing “major incident”.

Police are searching HGVs after reports of “concerns for the welfare of people travelling on the motorway”, leaving Man City and Burton Albion fans snarled up in traffic.

A Highways England spokesman said: “The M6 is closed in both directions between junction 15 and Junction 16 (Stoke-on-Trent) due to a Staffordshire Police led incident.

“Road users intending on using this section of road are advised to allow plenty of extra time for their journey and to consider alternative routes (if possible).”

One motorist reported seeing 22 police vehicles making their way to the scene.

Highways England first reported the incident was affecting traffic on the Northbound carriageway between junction 15 and junction 16 at around 4pm — with 90 minute delays currently reported on the route.

Witnesses sau a large number of emergency vehicles are attending the scene with traffic now stopped in both directions.

A number of eyewitnesses say police have been pulling over lorries.

Hundreds of motorists are trapped in the closure, including many Burton Albion fans on their way to watch the game with Manchester City.

One fan said it had taken 90 minutes to get from junction 16 to Keele Services — with some motorists reporting delays of more than two hours.

Staffordshire Police are also asking motorists to avoid the area.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: “Both northbound and southbound carriageways of the M6 between J15 and J16 are completely closed due to an ongoing police incident. Please avoid the area.”

A CMPG spokeswoman said:  “Ongoing major incident on the M6 near Stoke-on-Trent.”

Inrix, the traffic data company, reports there are two lanes closed on the northbound carriageway – with the incident reportedly between Keele Services and junction 16.
