New photo Kayaker captures a pod of dolphins chasing herring off the coast of Cornwall

A kayaker was treated to a rare spectacle when he stumbled across of pod of dolphins during a feeding frenzy off the British coast.

The majestic marine animals were caught on camera by a kayaker while feeding in crystal blue waters off the coats off Mousehole, Penzance in Cornwall.

Rupert Kirkwood, a vet, was paddling in flat and calm conditions when he encountered the rare natural spectacle.

Footage captured on a GoPro shows the pod of dolphins hunting a shoal of herring and corralling them into a swirling bait bail.

Mr Kirkwood sits silently in his kayak as the dolphins breach the water while the surface occasionally bubbles with fish as they try to escape.

The sea mammals dip and glide through the water to feed on mouthfuls of the fish which swarm in a tightly packed sphere - a defensive technique used by fish when they are threatened by predators.

And the dolphins even dip under Mr Kirkwood's kayak trying to catch fish who desperately try to hide under his vessel.

Mr Kirkwood wrote on his blog: 'Superb encounter with twenty common dolphins off Mousehole.

'I sat and watched a pod of 20-25 Common Dolphins cruising about and herding and attacking a baitball of herring.

'I hardly had to paddle a single stroke during the whole time, because the fish kept trying to take refuge underneath my kayak.

'Hard to believe this is in the UK in mid January.'

But he now concentrates on offshore kayaking in search of extreme sea creatures and has encountered three species of whale, four species of dolphin, basking sharks, Giant Bluefin Tuna, sunfish, seals and a leatherback turtle.

And the avid kayaker often documents his encounters with sea life around the Cornish coast.

In July, he captured the moment a grey seal pup hopped up onto the front of his kayak attempting to hitch a ride.
