NEWCASTLE won their first FA Cup away tie for 13 years – but Rafa Benitez was left counting the cost.

Joselu and Ayoze Perez struck in extra-time to earn the Toon a fourth-round tie against Watford later this month.

But centre backs Ciaran Clark and Jamal Lascelles both picked up injuries – to add to the one Jonjo Shelvey suffered in the original tie.

And the fact his team had to play 120 minutes just four days before their huge relegation scrap with Cardiff was just what Benitez didn’t need.

Just 56 seconds had passed when Sean Longstaff – who spent last season down the road at Blackpool – tried his luck from 25 yards.

His shot took a huge deflection off Amari’i Bell and it completely wrong-footed Rovers goalkeeper David Raya to give the Toon an early lead.

The Blackburn keeper did well to keep out Matt Ritchie’s shot with his legs but it wasn’t long before the Toon doubled their lead.

Jacob Murphy burst down the right and was denied by Raya but kept his composure and squared for Callum Roberts to mark his full debut with a goal.

Two goals up inside the first quarter of the game – and both by Geordies. Finally the Toon Army had something to smile about.

But Rovers had a Tyneside born youngster of their own in their team – and Adam Armstrong must have been feeling left out.

Danny Graham’s clever through ball sent him racing through and his shot just had enough to beat Freddie Woodman.

He refused to celebrate in front of the visiting fans – but the ex Newcastle man had dragged his current team firmly back into the game.

Rovers had renewed confidence and defender Darragh Lenihan planted a header over the bar from a corner – which should have served as a warning to Newcastle.

Clearly they did not heed it though as from another flag-kick by Harrison Reed, Lenihan got up highest to nod in the equaliser on the stroke of half time.

Benitez threw on skipper Jamal Lascelles for Ciaran Clark at half-time and within minutes his worst fears had been realised.

The centre back clutched his hamstring as he went to shepherd the ball out of play – and he was replaced just 11 minutes into the second half.

Why he stayed on as long as he did is anyone’s guess – Benitez shrugged his shoulders and gestured as Lascelles indicated he wanted to play on.

The pair exchanged words as he made his way off. How costly could it be if both centre backs are ruled out of Saturday’s crunch with Cardiff with injuries picked up here?

The replacement Isaac Hayden could have won it for the Toon but his header hit the outside of Raya’s post midway through the second half.

Sub Bradley Dack came so close to winning it in the first period of extra time but slid an effort just wide.

And Rovers were made to pay as Fabian Schar’s thumping shot was only parried by Raya and Joselu tapped home the rebound.

Replays showed the Spaniard was offside – but his first goal since August was allowed to stand.

Then soon after the re-start sub Perez got away down the right and cut in before lashing a shot into the top corner.
