British chef Jamie Oliver has spent £6million on a 16th century mansion despite rumours its top floor nursery is haunted.

Jamie, 43, his wife Jools, 44, and their five kids are due to move in the recently-bought manor house next month.

A source told the Sun on Sunday: 'It’s an amazing place and the whole family fell in love with it at first viewing.'

The mansion is a 70-acre 16th century estate in Essex, within walking distance to the pictoresque village of Finchingfield

'The only thing Jamie wasn’t so sold on was the top-floor nursery which is said to be haunted, and has put off several perspective buyers.'

Legend has it that there is a rocking horse there which, during the night, starts rocking and creaking.

The mansion is a 70-acre estate in Essex, with a six-bed farmhouse, three-bed lodge, converted stables and a cart shed.

The house, dating back to 1570, had been owned by the same aristocratic family since the 1700s.

Spains Hall is located in the heart of North West Essex, within walking distance to Finchingfield, which is considered one of England's most picturesque villages.

Today, the mansion is an Elizabethan country house, which has been embellished over 400 years. 

The main features of the mansion were built in the 1580s, with the Dutch gables added in 1637 and a final wing in the same style added in the 1890s.

In the roof above the dining room there is still a fragment of the house from medieval times.   

The most recent alterations were carried out between 2008 and 2010, but they show almost no visible changes to the appearance of the main facades nor the main rooms.

The mansion was involved in a 150-year treasure mystery, after some raiders stole the family's silver but, while escaping, their vehicle got stock in mud.

The burglars threw the silver in a lake and the treasure was only found about 150 years later. 

Jamie has bought the house after he was recently forced to plough £13million of his money into his restaurant chain Jamie's Italian.

Last year he reported losses of £20million and had to shut 12 of his restaurant's branches.   

The chef plans to convert some of the rooms into a big kitchen from which he can film shows and hold some masterclasses

One of the bedrooms in the mansion, pictured, has two big windows overlooking the land. Overall, there are six bedrooms

The house was involved in a treasure mystery when some burglars stole the family's silver, they threw it in a lake while escaping and it was only found one century and a half later
