MANCHESTER CITY accidentally bid just £50million for Lionel Messi in 2008.
The incredible revelation came out in a serialisation of a book discussing the effects of money in football, in the Times.
When Sheikh Mansour was looking to take over City in September 2008, he committed to doing so under one condition: That the club signed a superstar.
Desperate to ensure the Eastlands side were given the cash influx they needed to change the face of Premier League football, officials got to work making calls.
Then owner Thaksin Shinawatra was ensuring something of a financial crisis, with his £1BILLION in assets frozen in his native Thailand.
With Shinawatra in trouble and the club recording a loss of £29.7million loss for the year ending May 31, 2008, the club hired Garry Cook as chief executive.
Cook was tasked with selling the club but after Sheikh Mansour agreed to the deal, he was left with just 24 hours to find the star forward he demanded.
On August 31, 2018 – deadline day – Cook and Shinawatra’s No2 Pairoj Piempongsant set about sanctioning a hasty, last-minute deal for any global superstar they could find.
Amidst a sea of phone calls and rushed discussions, the word “messy” was uttered in respect to the bonkers situation.
Suddenly Cook received a phone call asking if he was certain about a move for Barcelona’s superstar Messi – to which he hesitantly and confusedly agreed to.

Cook is said to have claimed: “Sure, just do it. If it works, great.”
It didn’t. And Manchester City had in fact just insulted Barcelona with the low-ball bid of the millennium.
The club went on to sign then-Brazilian superstar Robinho – who would go on to play just 41 times for City, scoring 14 times.
