Looking after the grandchildren, playing sport and doing jigsaw puzzles may also help to keep you healthy.
Researchers asked 7,304 people aged over 50 to rate the worth of their daily activities.
Those who scored highest were in better health, wealthier and had stronger family relationships.
Positive thinking also helps people stay healthy, the study found.

Professor Andrew Steptoe, study leader from University College London, said: “Living a meaningful life may contribute to future health and optimal ageing.”
Dr Daisy Fancourt, who also worked on the study, added: “What is important is that the individual finds these activities worthwhile.”
George McNamara, from charity Independent Age, said more needs to be done to recognise the benefits of such activities and get more involved.
