The mystery surrounding the disappearance of wartime musician Glenn Miller's aircraft crash could be a step closer to being solved, 74 years after the jazz star's disappearance.

A previously-unknown witness has claimed he is 'utterly convinced' he pulled up the wreckage of Miller's small plane in his fishing nets while out on the English Channel 32 years ago.

Following the advice of coastguards at the time, the unnamed fisherman dropped the aircraft back where he found it around 30 miles south of Portland Bill, Dorset.

It was not until years later when he saw photographs of the UC-64 Norseman plane Miller was in when it vanished in December 1944 that he thought his find may be connected.

Now a team from the US-based The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has teamed up with local divers Deeper Dorset to try and find the wreckage.

They plan to return to the UK later this year to carry out a physical search of the area for the plane.

Members of TIGHAR have already visited Dorset to interview the witness and gain the precise coordinates to work out exactly where he found the wreckage. They were able to confirm that no official records exist of any aircraft at that location.

Ric Gillespie, of TIGHAR, said: 'We know what happened to Glenn Miller. He took a flight he shouldn't have taken and went down on the English Channel.

'But finding the wreckage of his plane will bring an end to the story and the conspiracy theories.'

The 71-year-old added he had spoken to the fisherman who claimed to have pulled up the plane more than 30 years ago.

He added: 'He said that in 1987 he was captain of a fishing trawler and their nets hooked on something. They pulled it to the surface and he was amazed to see what he had was a small aircraft with World War Two markings.

'It was the whole plane, a single engine, fixed landing gear with the wing tips sticking out of his net.

'He radioed the coastguard and they said it could be a war grave and to get rid of it and that is what he did.

'He took a note of the location and thought nothing more of it it.

'Several years later he realised the plane he pulled up looked very much like the plane in which Glenn Miller disappeared in.

'This was 1987 and nobody had a camera to hand like you would have now.

'He is utterly convinced that the plane he hauled up in 1987 was the Miller aircraft.

'We checked official records of what aircraft wrecks are known of in the part of the English Channel and how much is know about them and the answer is that there aren't any recorded.'

Mr Gillespie, who is an aviation accident investigator for the US insurance industry, said: 'It is still very long shot that this could lead to the discovery of Glenn Miller's aircraft.'

The disappearance of Glenn Miller is one of the great mysteries of the Second World War.

He took off from RAF Twinwood Farm in Bedfordshire on December 15, 1944, to fly to Paris where he was due to give a morale-boosting performance to troops.

Yet the jazz musician, who was one of the best-selling recording artists in the 1930s and '40s, never made it, and there has been a number of conspiracy theories since his disappearance over the English Channel.

The leading theory is that the pilot strayed into a bomb jettison zone over the Channel and was struck by an explosive dropped from a Lancaster returning from a raid on Germany.

Another is that he made it to Paris but died in a brothel.

The plane flew within a few miles of Woodley Airfield, Berks, at about 2.12pm before turning south. It nor those on board were ever seen again.
