A 74-year-old former Avon lady has been convicted of killing her 54-year-old boyfriend after she saw him urinating in her conservatory after a drinking session.

Angela Ayre stabbed Mark Evans with a knife at the home they had shared for 23 years in Dunstable, Bedfordshire on the night of March 8.

Ayre initially faced a murder charge, but a jury downgraded this to manslaughter after ruling she had tried to cause some harm, but not serious harm. She had claimed Mr Evans' death was accidental as she didn't realise she was holding a knife.

Trial judge Andrew Bright QC adjourned sentence for Ayre until next month.

He granted the pensioner bail until then but said he wanted a full pre-sentence report along with a medical report.

During the trial, the court heard Ayre suffered from a variety of medical problems including diabetes and asthma. She also has issues with her blood pressure.

Judge Bright told Ayre he needed to know more about her health.

He warned her that she was looking at a significant custodial sentence, but he said he wanted to know more about how she would cope with prison.

Ayre was told to come to court for the sentencing hearing 'prepared for the worst but hoping for the best’.

The court heard how on the night of March 8 last year the pair were drinking heavily at the semi-detached house they shared in Dunstable.

She told the jury she had been in her kitchen when she saw him urinating in her conservatory.

Ayre, who has two children from her marriage, told the jury of six men and six women she was washing up when he 'barged' into her saying: 'He probably tripped and that's when he barged into me.

'I did not even know I had a knife in my hand and he fell down behind me.'

Mr Evans died from a stab wound to the heart.
