New photo Eileen Derbyshire has no ‘immediate plans’ to return to Coronation Street as Emily Bishop after three year break

CORONATION Street fans have demanded to know if stalwart Eileen Derbyshire will ever return after not being seen on screen for three years.

The soap stalwart – the longest-serving female in British soap – took extended leave in December 2015 and last appeared in the ITV show the following January, when her character Emily Bishop left to visit Peru.

She was granted time off by bosses for personal reasons and executives say she has refused to call time on her career as one of the biggest names in soap.

They insist the door has been left open for her to return at any time, although there are “no immediate plans” according to a show source.

Emily is regularly referenced on screen, most recently during an episode last week, which is no surprise considering Eileen, 87, has chalked-up 58 years in Weatherfield having joined in January 1961.

After she decided to take a break, writers explained her absence with a storyline that saw her go to South America to spend time with hippy nephew Spider.

But after it was revealed that Malcolm Hebden (Norris Cole) will return after a long illness, fans were left wondering about Eileen.

The respected Coronation Street Blog said on Twitter: “Closure please, Corrie, for those of us who’ve grown up with and miss Emily.”

Another added: “Its a bit silly that she left nearly 3 years ago and number 3 is still full of her possessions and treasured items.”

A fellow fan of Eileen’s wrote on Twitter: “Will we ever see the return of the magnificent Eileen Derbyshire? Gone for so long and there’s nothing to explain why other people live in her house.”

Eileen, who won an MBE for services to drama in 2010, is one of the ITV soap’s most recognisable faces.

Only Bill Roache, 86, has been on the show longer and he has played Ken Barlow since the first episode in 1960.

Eileen’s character Emily, a devout Christian, backed out of marrying shop manager Leonard Swindley on their wedding day in 1964.

Eileen is the longest-serving female in any British soap and has had some major storylines in Coronation Street over the years

She eventually married Ernest Bishop in 1972 — but she was widowed six years later when he was shot in a botched robbery.

Other big plots included a breakdown and an attempt on her life by Gail’s husband Richard Hillman.

And she has been pals with some of the soap’s best-known characters, including Mavis Riley, Betty Turpin, Hilda Ogden and Rita Sullivan.
