A TWO-YEAR-OLD child has been airlifted to hospital after falling into a RHINO enclosure at a zoo in Florida.
Firefighters raced to Brevard Zoo this afternoon after a “hands on experience” offered at the attraction went badly wrong, officials said.
The toddler was taking part in an educational session when they fell between the polls and into the yard with the animals at around midday today, orlando.com reports.
“According to witnesses, the child stumbled and fell in between two of the poles and at this point, the snout of at least one of rhinoceroses made contact with the child,” Zoo spokesman Elliot Zirulnik said in an email to the site.
The extent of the child’s injuries are not yet known.
Medics have flown the minor to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, while their mother was also taken to a medical centre for treatment.
WESH TV reporter Dan Billow reported the age of the victim was two, according to zoo officials.
Brevard Zoo is home to four southern white rhinos, including a male named Howard and two females named Uzuri and Kibibi.
Howard, who weights 5,200 pounds, joined the pack in October, according to the zoo.
The horned animals can weigh up to four tonnes and measure up to 6ft in length.
Visitors are able to interact with the massive mammals during a zookeeper-led experience, according to the Brevard Zoo website.
Spokesman Zirulnik said the attraction has been offered for ten years without such an incident happening.

“The zoo has offered this experience daily without incident since 2009,” he said.
Executive director Keith Winsten added: “Our number one concern is the safety and welfare of our guests, and our hearts go out to the family.
“Safety has always been of paramount importance to us and we are suspending these encounters until we have thoroughly reviewed our processes and procedures to ensure this cannot happen again.”
