New photo Chelsea star Marcos Alonso demands VAR bosses explain how the system works

MARCOS ALONSO has demanded VAR bosses fully explain to players how the controversial video ref system works.

Chelsea are seething over Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Spurs — after the technology was used to help award Harry Kane a match-winning penalty.

Blues defender Alonso claims VAR is still causing headaches, even though it is set to be introduced to the Premier League next season.

The Spain ace, 28, fumed: “Are we very angry? Of course. You come to Wembley and play a good game but you go home with a 1-0 defeat. It’s very disappointing. VAR was used and it created a lot of confusion.

“I don’t know what they have to do — but they have to explain it properly to the linesmen, referees and to us.”

Chelsea were KO’d by Kane’s 25th- minute penalty after video ref Chris Kavanagh overturned an offside  decision against the Spurs striker in the build-up to the striker being brought down in the area by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The official VAR video appeared to show Kane being played onside by Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta, prompting referee Michael Oliver to award the spot-kick.

But livid Blues boss Maurizio Sarri claimed the club’s own video  proved Kane was offside. He blasted: “At the moment English referees are not able to use the system. I don’t know if they are up for it.”

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino also criticised the way VAR is currently used in England.

And suppliers Hawk-Eye last night admitted that, although they had five calibrated cameras inside the stadium, only one clearly showed the incident — but it was not directly in line with Kane or Azpilicueta.

The refs’ governing body PGMOL met all clubs who would be using VAR this season — including Chelsea — 12 months ago to explain how the system works.

But Alonso added: “The referee told me they have explained it to us already. But I think maybe they haven’t explained it to this linesman. Because he stopped and  if there is any doubt that it’s not offside, he has to continue running.

“We’re disappointed because Tottenham didn’t cause us any trouble. We controlled the game, were the better team, but lost 1-0.

“We were unlucky. They only had one chance and it was thanks to the linesman, the VAR.  When watching it on video it looks like it’s offside.  The linesman has stopped and put the flag up, so we all stopped.”

Azpilicueta and Alonso confronted Oliver on the pitch — and again in the Wembley tunnel at half-time.

Alonso revealed: “I tried to speak with the officials but it was too late after the penalty.

“There is nothing we could do, we just had to try to keep our heads in the game and score. But we couldn’t.”

Asked if Oliver should have spoken with his assistant who flagged for  offside, instead of the VAR, Alonso added: “The guy stopped. I think if we have to wait for VAR, he has to continue running.

“But he has stopped in the middle of his path, so it’s confusing.  When he stopped to put the flag up, we also stopped — but then we had to keep running.

“It changes things,  maybe Kepa gets out to the ball quicker, or maybe as a defender you have to run back. But we had stopped because the linesman stopped.”

Former top Prem ref Mark Halsey says assistant ref Mick McDonough should not have flagged for the  marginal offside call but waited instead as — in this instance —  VAR would have been automatically used to check the Kane penalty and offside incident.

Halsey said: “I feel sorry for the assistant referees. Because the current offside law is confusing for everyone, due to the number of scenarios within it. What is offside? When is a player active? And when does a player impact on a defender?

“So I believe the assistant referees should keep their flags down for marginal offsides — just like we saw at the World Cup. VAR automatically checks goals, penalties and red cards, plus there are other benefits.

“It would allow the game to flow and help defenders because — as Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri rightly said — once his backline saw a flag appear they suddenly stopped. So that excuse would be taken away with players knowing they must play to the whistle.

“This  would make life easier for everyone, including the assistants themselves, by not interfering on   tight calls — and  hopefully lead to more action and goals.”

But Alonso insists the VAR farce will make Chelsea even more determined to get revenge in the second leg at Stamford Bridge a fortnight today, when the video ref will be in use again.

He added: “We have the opportunity to put this right. Will this be an added  motivation? Of course.

“It’s always a game full of motivation when we play against another London team in the semi-final of a cup.

“But now those levels will be at the limit — and if we play like we did at Wembley — then we will get a good result.”
