BRITS are being warned of a norovirus outbreak as freezing temperatures bring the risk of the vomiting bug.

Also known as the winter vomiting bug, norovirus can leave you bedridden for several days.

Since July last year there have been 2,089 cases of the winter vomiting bug in England and Wales, around five per cent lower that the last few seasons.

There have been several confirmed outbreaks in the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East and Yorkshire in the last two weeks, according to the latest Public Health England data.

Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP and clinical director of patient.info, warned there is a greater risk of an outbreak during the colder months of winter.

“You don’t just catch it through people who are infected, you can also pick up the bugs from surfaces,” she told The Sun Online.

“We think that it the virus survives for longer in winter.

“Norovirus is spread through close person to person contact and in winter, particularly around Christmas, that’s more common.

“It’s spread by the faecal oral route – so if you’re infected you pass out germs when you poo and then if you don’t wash properly then handle food or touch someone else it passes the germs on.

“It’s also quite difficult to get rid of the germs through normal cleaning, so you need to wash really thoroughly.”

Nick Phin, deputy director of the national infection service at Public Health England, said cases of norovirus have been increasing as winter sets in.

“For most people this is an unpleasant, short-lived illness with a full recovery within 1-2 days,” he said.

“It is important to drink plenty of fluids during that time to prevent dehydration especially in the very young, elderly or those with weakened immunity.

“We advise people not to visit GP surgeries and hospitals with symptoms as this can spread the infection, however, if they are concerned they should contact NHS 111 or talk to their GP by phone.

“One of the best ways to protect against norovirus and to help prevent infection is by practising good hygiene.

“This includes thorough hand washing with soap and warm water after using the toilet and before eating or preparing foods.”

Brits are braced for plunging temperatures and even snow over the coming week as a a triple polar vortex will bring a freezing Arctic blast.

Temperatures are set to drop to as low as -11C in some areas.

Forecasters expect pockets of the white stuff to blanket northern England from Wednesday January 10.

A Met Office forecaster told Sun Online: “Snowfall may strike the north of England towards the end of next week, while the south enjoys much milder temperatures.

“But temperatures will continue to drop as the week progresses, bringing heavier wintry showers particularly in the North East.”

Norovirus is one of the most common stomach bugs in the UK and is rampant during the colder months, although you can catch it at any time of year.

If you have norovirus you will experience a sudden feeling of sickness, projectile vomiting and watery diarrhoea.

You may also have a slight fever, headaches, painful stomach cramps and aches and pains.

If you do start experiencing these symptoms you should always stay at home and get plenty of rest until you are feeling better.

You should not go to work, or let your child go to school if they are infected, as you will spread the illness to other people you have contact with – and no one will thank you for that.

Symptoms usually clear up in two to three days, but if they don’t that’s when you should speak to your GP.

To help your body fight the bug you should get plenty of rest, make sure you drink plenty of fluids to stop yourself becoming dehydrated, you can take paracetamol for the aches and pains and you can take antidiarrhoeal and anti-vomiting medication.
