OF the eight planets in our solar system, five of them can be seen with the naked eye.
We explain which ones they are and how you can catch a glimpse of them this month.
Which planets are visible to the naked eye from Earth?
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are visible for much of the year.
Planets look different to stars because their brightness varies in a cycle over a period of time and they are close enough to Earth to look like a tiny disk whereas stars look like a point of light.
Saturn and Mars are commonly mistaken for stars during their dimmer periods, according to Naked Eye Planets.
Stars also generate their own light whereas planets do not.
Planets shine by reflecting a portion of the sunlight they receive back into space.
The brightness of the planet depends on its distance from the sun, the size of the planet and the position of the planet and Earth.
Planets can be seen during a period called apparition.
Mars, Mercury and Venus can be seen during dawn or dusk when in this period.
For Jupiter and Saturn can be seen in the dawn sky.
Apparitions can last a few weeks (in the case of Mercury) to almost two years (in the case of Mars).
When will you be able to see the planets?
For this month, Mars will be visible in the evening and Venus and Jupiter will be visible in the morning.
Saturn will become visible towards the end of the month and Mercury will fade from the morning sky as the month progresses.
This month got off to a great start as Venus was shining brighter than Jupiter in the morning sky, but as it has progressed Jupiter now shines brighter, according to EarthSky.
After January, Venus will right just before dawn’s first light until mid-March.
Jupiter will be seen with Venus throughout January just before dawn and will start to travel eastward in the sky until April.
On June 10, Jupiter will be at its brightest.
Saturn will shine brilliantly starting January 30 just before dawn.
Mercury was seen in the morning sky in December and for most of January.
