"Many Photos" - What was Sam Cooke’s cause of death, what are his best songs and how old was he?

NAMED the King of Soul, Sam Cooke was one of the most influential musicians of all time.

But how did the soul singer die and what were his best songs? Here’s everything you need to know.

Sam Cooke was named the King of Soul

Who was Sam Cooke?

Samuel Cook, known as Sam Cooke, was an American singer popular in the late 50s and early 60s.

He was nicknamed the King of Soul as his distinctive voice had a huge impact on the world of popular music.

Cooke sang in The Soul Stirrers as a child and went on to have an incredibly successful solo career.

He added an ‘E’ to the end of his surname to signify the start of a new life in 1957.

Cooke had 30 US top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, and three more posthumously.

How did he die?

Cooke was shot dead at the age of 33 on December 11, 1964, at the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles.

His body was found by police dressed in only a sports jacket and a shoe.

The motel manager Bertha Franklin is said to have shot him out of self-defence after he came into the motel office looking for a girl.

Elisa Boyer had called the police after reportedly escaping the motel room Cooke took her to, fearing he was going to rape her.

The police came to the motel for reports of a shooting and a kidnapping.

Franklin was let off the killing as it was deemed a “justified homicide”.

However many people doubt the validity of Franklin and Boyer’s stories and think it was a planned killing, perhaps orchestrated by Cooke’s manager Allen Klein who owned all the rights to Cooke’s recordings.

Cooke’s most popular songs include: “You Send Me”, “A Change Is Gonna Come”, “Cupid”, “Chain Gang”, “Wonderful World”, “Another Saturday Night”, and “Twistin’ the Night Away”.

Twistin’ the Night Away was one of his biggest selling albums.

Which artists did Sam Cooke influence?

His contribution to soul music inspired the likes of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womak, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Billy Preston.

He also popularised aritsts like Otis Redding and James brown.

Sam Cooke is said to be the “inventor of soul music” by biographer Bruce Eder.
