President Donald Trump wished the country a happy new year in a Twitter video with a self-pitying reminder that he'll be ringing in 2019 at the White House instead of at a lavish Mar-a-Lago ball with Melania as was previously planned.
'While I'm at the White House working you're out there partying tonight, but I don't blame you,' Trump said in the 11-second video.
'Enjoy yourselves, we're going to have a great year. Have a really, really happy new year.'
Trump followed that tweet up with a string of posts about the border wall - which is the reason he's spent the holidays alone.
The president cancelled his trip to Mar-a-Lago amid the government shutdown that began December 21 when Democrats refused to put the $5billion Trump wants to fund the wall into the Congressional budget.
As midnight approached on Monday night, Trump called in to Fox News' All-American New Year special for an interview with contributor Pete Hegseth.
'I'm sitting in the White House right now. I'm talking to you,' Trump said when asked what his plans were for the night.
He quickly changed the subject and said: 'We need border security. Everybody knows it. We need a lot of people approved that we can't get through the senate. We have 360 people. They want to join the administration. The ambassadors and lawyers and lots of other people. We cannot get them approved. Because I could you could call it obstruction if you think about it it it. It is pure obstruction.
'We have a lot of other things. We have probably done more, Pete, than any administration in the first two years in history according to most.'

Hours earlier the president wished America a 'Happy New Year' in a Twitter video with a self-pitying reminder that he would be ringing in 2019 at the White House instead of at Mar-a-Lago with his family as was previously planned. 'While I'm at the White House working you're out there partying tonight, but I don't blame you,' Trump said in the 11-second video. 'Enjoy yourselves, we're going to have a great year. Have a really, really happy new year'
Probing for more details about Trump's take on the shutdown, Hegseth said: 'You stayed in Washington, DC, We've seen Nancy Pelosi in Hawaii and Democrats not ready to come back. They want to see you stand firm. Are you willing to continue the shutdown if the money does not come?'
Trump replied: 'We have to have border security. The wall is part of border security. I hear about the wall is old fashioned. It is not old fashioned. It is 100 percent foolproof.
He continued: 'You look at the wheel. I guess they would say the wheel is old fashioned. It's been around for a long time. The wall is the only way to do it.
'Technology. Nobody knows more about technology than me. Technology is just the bells and whistles on the wall. If you don't have the wall, you are going to have people coming in. And my border patrol people they do a fantastic job. You know, they need the backup of the wall. They are the ones that want it more than anybody.'
Hegseth then asked: 'How far are you willing to go, Mr. President? Where do you anticipate talks with [Senate minority leader] Chuck [Schumer] and [House minority leader Nancy [Pelosi]?'
Trump responded: 'I'm assume when they get back. I'm in Washington. I'm ready, willing, and able. They could have come over right now. I spent Christmas in the White House. I spent New Year's Eve now in the White House. I'm here. I'm ready to go. It is very important.
'A lot of people are looking to get their paycheck. So I'm ready to go any time they want. We're not giving up. We have to have border security. The wall is a big part of border security. The biggest part.'
While Trump rang in the New Year in Washington, First Lady Melania attended a lavish ball as Mar-a-Lago. She is pictured with United Nations Ambassador Paolo Zampolli in a photo he posted to Instagram with the caption: 'NYE Mar a Lago. We miss you POTUS'
Writer Charlie Kirk who was also attending the Mar-A-Lago bash shared this selfie with the First Lady to Twitter

Earlier in the day, Trump unleashed a string of tweets about the wall, including one that read: 'MEXICO IS PAYING FOR THE WALL through the many billions of dollars a year that the U.S.A. is saving through the new Trade Deal, the USMCA, that will replace the horrendous NAFTA Trade Deal, which has so badly hurt our Country. Mexico & Canada will also thrive - good for all!'
It's not the first time that Trump has claimed that anticipated savings under the USMCA will cover the costs of the wall.
He continues in two more tweets: 'The Democrats will probably submit a Bill, being cute as always, which gives everything away but gives NOTHING to Border Security, namely the Wall. You see, without the Wall there can be no Border Security - the Tech "stuff" is just, by comparison, meaningless bells & whistles...
'...Remember this. Throughout the ages some things NEVER get better and NEVER change. You have Walls and you have Wheels. It was ALWAYS that way and it will ALWAYS be that way! Please explain to the Democrats that there can NEVER be a replacement for a good old fashioned WALL!'
Trump later posted a string of tweets about the border wall, which is the reason he's spent the holidays away from his family amid the government shutdown. The tweets are pictured
As Trump sits in the White House, his children and wife Melania had a much more glamorous New Years Eve at Mar-a-Lago.
Among the many attendees posting photos was United Nations Ambassador Paolo Zampolli, who shared an Instagram photo alongside the First Lady, writing in the caption: 'NYE Mar a Lago. We miss you POTUS.'
This was one of Trump's few New Year's in the past decade not spent at Mar-a-Lago.
'He's canceled his plans for Christmas - now he's canceled his plans for New Year's,' acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney told 'Fox and Friends' on Friday.
The president was originally supposed to spend 16 days over the holidays at his Florida estate. But he changed his plans when the government shut down the weekend before Christmas.
Negotiations to reopen it are at a standstill and no progress is expected until Democrats take control of the House of Representatives on January 3.

The first lady returned to the White House for Christmas Eve and to join the president on his visit to US troops in Iraq. But she flew back to Florida on Thursday, and is now there with 12-year-old son Barron.
Before she arrived at the White House for Christmas Eve, Trump took to Twitter to complain: 'I am all alone (poor me) in the White House.'
He could be in a similar situation for this holiday.
Trump's children Donald Jr. and Eric and Lara Trump are believed to be in Mar-a-Lago. New Year's Eve is Donald Jr's birthday.
Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump also are believed to be in Mar-a-Lago. They were spotted there over Christmas.
Kushner was seen in Washington D.C. over the weekend when he joined the president and Mulvaney at Vice President Mike Pence's home Saturday night for dinner.
But Ivanka Trump's assistant emerged from the couple's Washington D.C. home on Monday to say the couple would return Tuesday night, indicating they are in Florida.
The White House did not respond to DailyMail.com's inquiries for details on how the president will spend his New Year's Eve and with who.
Trump has spend nearly every New Year's Eve for the past decade at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. He is pictured above at a celebration in 2002 with Melania (whose last name was Knauss at the time, his son Eric and Eric's then-girlfriend (and future wife) Lara Yunaska
Last year, the president hosted his family, celebrities and members of his Cabinet at Mar-a-Lago. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was there with his wife Louise Linton as were Fox Business host Lou Dobbs and former New York Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez.
Traditionally, Mar-a-Lago puts out a red carpet for its black-tie New Year's gala.
'We're going to have a fantastic 2018,' Trump told reporters as he strolled down the red carpet at the end of 2017.
The president and his son, Barron, both wore tuxedos to the event and Melania Trump wore full length rose colored glittery gown.
This year, tickets for the event cost $1,000 for club guests and $650 for club members, up from $750 and $600, respectively, according to the Palm Beach Post.
Hundreds of guests usually attend the gala, which begins with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. That's followed by a four-course dinner that ends with a signature dessert - the meringue-topped baked Alaska.
