Julie Bishop has used a Russian accent to impersonate Vladimir Putin while recalling the moment she was forced to confront the president about the downing of flight MH17.

The former Minister for Foreign Affairs shared the story at a speaking engagement at the University of New South Wales, in Sydney's east, on Friday.

Ms Bishop explained she was sent to a summit on behalf of then-Prime Minister Tony Abbott amid the infamous 'shirtfronting' saga in 2014.

The summit, held in Milan, came days after Mr Abbott had promised to 'shirtfront' Mr Putin over the downing of the Malaysia Airlines flight.

Ms Bishop said that while she didn't have an official meeting with President Putin, she knew it was her duty to forcefully deliver Australia's message about the MH17 disaster.

'So at a point in the proceedings I saw that his advisors had left him for a cup of coffee or a break of some description, so he was alone at the table, so I hot-footed around the other side and tapped him on the shoulder,' said Ms Bishop.

The pair had a ten-minute conversation in English which was snapped by her DFAT officer who was having 'conniptions' on the other side of the room.

'His eyes never left my face, and they are piercing blue eyes, and then he said ''So this is what you call a shirtfront?''' the Liberal MP said on Friday.

'I said ''It's more of a diplomatic buttonholing''.'

Ms Bishop smirked as she put on a Russian accent to impersonate the president, causing an outburst of laughter at the event.

She said Mr Putin was whisked away by his advisors moments later where he reverted to speaking Russian. 

Almost 300 people died when the Malaysia Airlines flight was shot down over Ukraine in 2014. Thirty-eight Australians were among the victims.

An investigation concluded that Russia was to blame as the plane was hit by surface-to-air missile launched by pro-Russian rebels.

Shirtfront was chosen by the Australian National Dictionary Centre as the word of the year in 2014 following Mr Abbott's use of the term.
