New photo Egypt hotel chef is suspended after cooking complaints

A chef working in the Egyptian resort where a British couple died has been suspended after a holidaymaker alleged staff put cooked meat on the same trays as uncooked steaks and didn't wash their hands.

Nikk Malee, from Scarborough, complained about chefs at the Tropitel Sahl Hasheesh in Hurghada in August, where she stayed with her husband Malcolm in August.

After she took her criticisms to travel agent Thomas Cook, the hotel investigated and has suspended a cook, it was confirmed today.

Mrs Malee filmed chefs who were barbecuing meat outside the five-star hotel. They appear to be handling both uncooked and cooked meat, which was later served to guests.

The 54-year-old told the SunOnline: 'All the time cooking, they didn't wash their hands and only wiped them on a piece of paper.'

She said the same trays were used for both cooked and uncooked meat after a liner was put down.

She only felt safe eating bread at the hotel and, after complaining to Thomas Cook, she was moved to other accommodation.

She is warning other holidaymakers to carefully check what they eat while on package holidays.

In a statement released today, Thomas Cook said: 'We want all of our customers to enjoy their holidays with us and we are very sorry that Mr and Mrs Malee did not enjoy their stay.

'After receiving the complaint we gave them a hotel upgrade and arranged early flights home at no extra cost.

'Following our investigation the hotel has suspended the chef and is putting measures in place to ensure that this doesn't happen again.'

John and Susan Cooper died suddenly on August 21, after becoming ill while staying at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel, also in Hurghada.

Egyptian authorities found Mr Cooper died from 'acute intestinal dysentery as a result of the E-Coli bacteria'.

They found Mrs Cooper died of 'an infection of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) that was likely caused by infection with the E-Coli bacteria'.

The couple's family are angry about the investigation and the way their deaths were handled.
